If the chassis is galvanised I wouldn't apply waxoyl as it could be detrimental to the galvanising effect. I thought if the galvanised surace is damaged the gavanise grows or moves to repair itself. Happy to be corrected on that one

I had a similar problem. I pulled the control knob off to find a nut behind the knob that had loosened and dropped off the spindle. The nut was to secure the panel behind the knob. Replacing and tightening the nut solved the issue.

Just a thought. . . Disconnect the battery before cutting the damaged cable.
