Caravan detaching from car after several miles

Our caravan was written off, thankfully insurance paid out, may have been a faulty hitch. We’ve ordered a new caravan and have Alco towballs and will be doing the jockey wheel tip at every hitch. My partners been towing since and is fine but I think my heart will be in my mouth the first few times!

Ours is higher than the measurement too now we’ve checked but would need to hitch caravan on to check level then and we always put the awning etc in the back of the pick up which would drop it. Caravan always looked level when hitched. Definitely worth researching as I would hate anybody to go...

Caravan detaching from car after several miles

Plan is to put a compatible tow bar on my car (that was the original plan but couldn’t get a tow bar fitted for weeks due to the volume of people requiring them) but now we know what we require and see what happens with the insurance - poor caravan has taken a bit of a bashing so I don’t think...

Caravan detaching from car after several miles

Sorry I was informing one of the other members that my partner usually tows other trailers as they thought it was HGV trailers and as you say yes it is the usual greased coupling or the eye. Yes my partner has mentioned it’s much easier to reverse an HGV as opposed to a caravan although he’s...

Caravan detaching from car after several miles

When we leave our house we have a mini roundabout then need to turn right at a roundabout, go straight through 3 roundabouts then turn right at a further roundabout then there’s a sweeping slip way round to the left onto a dual carriageway which is downhill all the way then goes uphill a fair...

Caravan detaching from car after several miles

The AA man who recovered us mentioned the tow ball as it has a pin hitch for towing other trailers but that’s interesting to hear about the Alko compatible tow balls, we’ll do some research into that. We were towing with his pick up as my car hasn’t got a tow ball on it yet

Caravan detaching from car after several miles

It doesn’t bare thinking about what could have happened as the gas canister came flying out too. The busiest motorway in Scotland too. All insured thankfully and although devastated by what has happened a caravan is replaceable. Thankfully the breakaway cable did its job. Definitely going to do...
