Graham, just a thought, but i had a similar problem. Turned out my cooker lid was down, and it has a safety switch on it which cuts the gas flow. May sound stupid, but it took me 5 hours to realise the lid wasn't lifted up enough. Failing that, i would suspect the regulator.

Just remove the handle before you hitch. It's one small bolt that holds the handle onto the actual shaft of the pressure pads, on the side. Hitch the van, and then slot handle back on, apply pressure, sorted. Its actually only the shape and thickness of the handle that causes the problem. But...

Pete, surely your idea sounds too good/easy to be true. After all, a car quite easily could double up as a generator if needed, and you HAVE to take the car when out with the van. How practical is your idea? Have you tried it? I have a generator, but try not to take it or use it if i can help...
