12v lights

We have just bought a 10 year old approx static caravan all wired for mains. It is my intention to wire it through with 12v lights 5 approx and one 12v cigar lighter socket to run the ocassional dvd. My questions are:

Can I use the existing mains wiring to the mains lights providing I use low wattage bulbs as suggested on some electrical retail site quoted below

"the equivalent light output.

Eg. a 10 Watt Halogen lamp produces the same light output as a 20 Watt standard bulb but uses about half the power and a 7 Watt compact fluorescent lamp gives the same light as a 40 Watt standard bulb but consumes only 20% of the power. Both have standard bayonet fittings and can therefore be used in "off the shelf Table Lamps directly on 12 Volts simply by replacing the mains plug with a 12 Volt type."

I realise they are talking about lamps but i was wondering if the same principle would apply to the existing wiring itself.

will it be simply a matter of terminating the wires before they access the mains supply and perhaps replacing it with a junction box of some sort that will then connect to the 12v battery. I have trawled the internet and just cannot find any information of this sort. We will be in a field without mains and must rely solely on battery power. Any help would be much appreciated and if anyone has any links to sites that may help I would be ecstatic. Thank you. JBrown

Cable size will be your main problem, the current carried by a cable determins its size. The 12volt supply you intend to use means that you will have to make sure you do not over load the circuit.

To work this out you need to use Ohms law WATTS = amps X volts

therefore amps = watts (divided by)/ volts. so a 20 watt lamp takes 1.67 amps when supplied at 12 volts.

Using 230 volts the 20 watt lamp only draws 0.08 amps.

Normal 230 volt lighting circuits cable is 1.0mm diameter cross section now comes the technical bit if the fuse is the wire type you can not have more than 5amps you also have to beaware of the length of the wire to the lamp the longer the run the bigger the voltage drop this is also affected by the current taken which means you may not be able to use the full 5amps. I could go on and there are ways of increasing the current alowed by using a different class of fuse but you realy need to have it looked at by an electrican.

As an electrician for many years I advise you to go ahead with existing wiring . If only a lighting circuit is connected in your static ( no fridge cooker etc) you can leave existing fuse boxes & connect battery straight on to main cable where it is taken off main supply. Hope this helps .

I am also an electrician and stand by my comment that he needs to have professional advise, and I am suprised that you give him the advise to go ahead based soely on what he has posted.

Hello again,

Many thanks to you both, I am obviously wanting to do this on the cheap but without risk to life and limb. I think I might try wiring an old lamp to the battery with a low wattage bulb and see for myself if it works and then take it from there. I might add that the most that we would have turned on in the van at any one time is likely to be 2 x 8 watt lights and perhaps the DVD.

Many thanks again. Jael (lady)

Hi I get the point your are saying but there is no need to go to great expence if all you are going to run is a couple of light bulbs & dvd. I have over the years been asked the same question with people putting statics on farm fields & wanting to use a 12v battery for lighting have fitted a couple up & had no problems . The main point is there is no risk of electric shock & if fuse is fitted no problems. Normaly wiring on static vans is pretty robust & will carry the small amps required for lighting at 12v easily. ( ps. I am an auto electrican.)

Hello Swiftman,

Thank you for that reassurance, I feel more confident in doing it now. One more question. Is it as easy as cutting the site socket off and attaching inline fuse and then the crocodile clips to 12v battery, or am i being too niave. Thank you in anticipation. Jael

Hi Jael Basically yes . If van is taken of the mains use the red wire & black wire , put a line fuse on the red cable 35amp. & off you go. any thing more than lights or dvd will blow fuse. Good luck with your project. ( Wires may be coloured coded brown & blue if so use brown as red / blue as black (neg) green earth wire not used.

Hello to Swiftman,

I am hoping you will be able to tell me whether normal low wattage light bulbs will suffice or do they have to be special 12v ones? Regards Jael

Hi Jael you will have to use 12v light bulbs either 5watt or max 20watt or you will flatten battery . You could try b&q for bulbs or go to a motor factors ( lucas etc) .
