We are interested in buying a van for the first time and have already printed of the reply to a previous posting regarding buying second hand. My query is, are the Hobby make of caravan a good one, in any of my local papers they seem to be alot cheaper than other makes. From the couple we have looked at them appear to be fine, but we don't really know what we are after.

Many thanks

Hi Emma

We looked at the hobby's for our first van, on reading some of these posts however there was a feeling that some sites are very wary about you,(thinking you are travellers) and that as long as you explained you were touring there wouldnt be a problem, I didnt fancy having to explain myself every time so decided against !

Hi Emma,

Welcome to a brilliant hobby.Yes Hobby caravans are good, but if you are not in a hurry for a caravan keep looking amongst your local caravan dealers plus the dealers on the internet and you WILL find your ideal caravan pricewise and everything else.I have found that when you rush into buying something you never really get what you really would feel happy about so take your time, don,t forget you have got to live in it and don,t go for an expensive caravan until you have tried caravanning, some people have bought caravans and find they do not like it.Good Luck in your search, and when you have found your caravan enjoy it.Jim

hi emma, the hobby caravans are good vans, only drawback is that you have to be careful which one you buy,the legal width for a caravan to be towed in this country is 230 cms(7ft-6ins) some of the hobbies are 250cm some 8ins wider

Apparently there is a loophole in the law and they cannot actually prosecute for pulling this van. Speak to your local police station. I was told you would be unlikely to be stopped as long as you were using a vehicle within the weight restrictions ie 4x4. We pull one (650 UMFE) with a Nissan Patrol) and it doesn't know its pulling it!

This is our second hobby and I would'nt give tuppence for a British Van. We have had no problems on various sites in the UK and have never been refused. Nor no problems with Insurance and Storage. I always ask about access though due to large size of the van.
