2,000 quid road tax???

Lib Dems have announced they would introduce a 2000 pounds road tax for Chelsea Tractors, "In order to change the cars that we buy, rather than the cars we are using at the moment".

Looks like bad news for big caravans.

Just to show how mad their Mr Huhne is, he says that even though airlines will be taxed fares will not rise as a direct result.

Just pray they never gain power.

A classic case of a politician listening to the loudest minority rather than the silent majority.

Mind you they are one of the "greener" parties - after all there last leader ran on alcohol did he not?

Politions should remember they are there to serve us the voters and not for their own personal preferences, by making statements like that they just loose votes, again we should email them and let them know our feelings. Also for the anti 4x4 brigade out there remember it could be them next, whos to say what they might take a dislike to next and propose insane btaxes on. As individuals we may not be heard but if we all voice our opinions then they have to hear us. Use the power of email and if you dont get an answer email them again.

How can any thinking person come up with something like this?

They must have forgotten that a significant number of people with 4x4 vehicles are farmers - on the lib dem web site (agriculture) it says:-

"We want to give farmers a fair price for their food by putting a stop to unfair practices from supermarkets. We want to speed up reform of the Common Agricultural Policy so that public money benefits the people who need it and protects the environment." Guess they might be giving any "benefits" straight back to the government again with extra!!

At least we can rest assured that with idiotic policies like this they will never get into power. It does seriously make you wonder what logic goes into suggesting these sort of policies though.

I have said it before, what we should do in this country is to adopt a page out of the French electoral book. If we do not agree have a public protest and not sit back and accept it. I am not pro France but I do admire the way they let their government know if they do not agree. Now Spain is to ask the EU for help to control asylum seekers to their country - where the hell has Blair and his croonies been all these years with our problems. There appears to be little thought or care for Joe Public in this country as all those in Whitehall seem to be the idle rich - sod you Jack I'm OK.

For those who want to let the Lib Dems know how they feel you can email them on:-

'info@libdems.org.uk'

I have done as Del suggests and emailed them what I think as someone who lives and works in a rural area. But that apart, what if someone who lives in Chelsea does want a 4x4, the do not polute anymore than some saloon cars (see the new list of high tax cars!) and the most popular 4x4's are shorter than a Mondeo.

It will be interesting if they bother to respond

Get real jon

Powergen, or any other power company, don't use the energy they generate, their customers do.

Industries don't use the products they make, consumers (ie us) do.

In the end all energy is used by us, one way or the other!

yes but what other consumers other than motorists have to tax the item they use, then pay 80% tax on the substance they need to use it?

Is there an annual aeroplane tax that Virgin, BA, Easyjet etc. have to pay? I know there is no duty payable on aircraft fuel!

As an former employee of one of the above, The answer is NO as duty on the Hull and the parts is suspended, it's only if they were to sell a bit of plane to you and me that various taxes and duties would be paid.

However it's not that simple the net generation in terns of employment to the UK economy is huge also imagine you in deepest Devon when 9/11 happened - the call from you manger says the value of the fleet has reduced by 80% in one afternoon.

Secondly the Airlines or rather their suppliers have made huge progress in emission and fuel economy over the last years..

Us motorist are hardly perfect - you only have to look at last weeks TOP Gear to see the article on the M40 with more than one person occupying a car I think the total amount was 6 cars in an hour !!

PS there are duties paid - abroad

Hang on MH, you are now talking about a trade off against employment in the UK?

But when I have said in the past about my favourite vehicle being Land Rover and the jobs in the UK that Lode Lane provide, you and others have poo-pooed the concept of a truly outstanding vehicle, UK built, in favour of non UK product.

But now when it suits you, you wheel out the "I am backing Britain" card.

Somewhat disingenuous of you don't you think?

Duties on what paid abroard???

Clive,

Of course it's a trade off

I "poo-pooed" LR because their quality hasn't lived up to it's price premium and because everyone in LR (until recently) had a hand in accepting mediocrity.

As for you point I have always cited that bring a car from Japan or Korea isn't exactly environmentally friendly !!

Both my cars were built in the EU in Modern environmentally friendly facilities .

Heathrow employees 100000 people within it's perimeter when they went through the LHR T5 planning enquiry it was cited that 500000 people work in an allied industry within 10 miles.

Duties are many and various

Duty paid on fuel imported (so you have to buy they're local stuff) at inlated prices

Duty on fuel at certain airports to pay for other things

"Infastrucure" taxes are the latest

Overfly rights ie crossing another country

"I am backing Britain"

Hi Tony,

Yes, I heard that on the early morning news! Nearly made me wet myself with laughter. Can you imagine the effect it would have on the car and caravan industry? And heres a point to think about. My "Chelsea Tractor" runs on veg oil,- reclaimed veg oil- at that. How will they tax that? 50% less emmissions, No additional CO2 and NO sulphur! Cleaner than most cars on the road. Oh, and I nearly forgot- disposing of a waste product into the bargain. It would be a good test case for the legal profession to sort out when I refused to pay there ridiculous tax wouldn't it?
