2005 Elddis Odyssey 505

Hi,
We're looking for a 5 berth double dinette van and we've seen the above advertised locally for £4995.

Elddis Odyssey 505 2005 Caravan. 5 berth,new tyres, hitch lock, water barrel and waste, porch awning. It was apparently serviced a year ago and was damp free (I'll check the paperwork!).

Does this seem like a reasonably price?

It looks like the cheaper end of the right range so worth checking out. Before you go further though I would get the chassis number and do an HPI and a NCC check to see if any HP outstanding or if it is registered as stolen. Before you buy do get proof of ownership and all service and maintainence documents. Do be wary there are a lot of fraudsters out there.

Hello Hitby,

Sadly the UK Caravan industry has an unenviable habit of making caravans that will almost certainly eventually leak. So the older a caravan is the more likely it will have or is likely to begin to have water ingress problems. So my main advice is to be be very searching for water problems.

The only way to really manage water problems is if the caravan has been properly serviced throughout its life.

As regards the price it's very difficult to know what's right it very much depends on condition, whats it would have been new, and if its a private sale or a dealer forecourt price.

At 12 years of age, and without knowing the details, I'd expect to see a private sale to be £750 to £1000 lower than a dealer.

If you find anything suspect with the paper work walk away.
Equally if there is anything with the condition of the caravan, then try to negotiate a price reduction walk away.

So, we went to look at the van and it all looked pretty good. We haggled a bit and paid £4600 and we're now proud owners of a 2005 Elddis Odyssey 505.

We took it out at the weekend and it was great but I waited to post until it had been serviced. He came today and fitted a motor mover and did a full service. No damp, theres an issue with the fuse pcb which means the omnivent doesn't turn on but we knew about that already. The heater only works on gas and 500 - doesn't heat when on 1000 or 2000 so he's getting a price to repair. Other than that, no issues to report.

I also managed to get a cancellation for a B+E test at short notice so did a couple of days training and pleased to say I passed so we're now all set to enjoy the summer!

Congratulations on passing the test and hope all goes well with the caravan. I would however suggest it is vest to get a damp test before buying as if there is damp once you have bought the caravan in a private sale you can be stuck with it.

Thanks Raywood, I agree, I swore I wouldn't buy another without an inspection but against my better judgement, she who must be obeyed really didn't want to miss out on this one. Fortunately, in this instance we got lucky.
