Who cares what the bloke/women next to you is driving, if they drive a 4x4 its their choice, if they drive a car so what and tow a van with it good luck to them. If you can afford a big expensive 4x4 then you can probably afford the fuel that goes with it. Its a bit like red or white wine or beer or lager ? Everyone has their own preference and opinion, I know what I like to drink and I know what I like to drive (not at the same time), its horses for courses and up to each caravaner.

It would be a bit like getting into a big forum debate over single or twin axle caravans, some people hate twin axles and some sites dont allow twin axles on. Who cares how many wheels your caravan has and how many driven wheels your car has.

Now there's a pretty pickle-who'll buy a 4x4 now, probably quite a few people will tomorrow, and the next day, and the next. Our local Kia dealer told us when we bought our 4x4 that they cant get them in quick enough, so they are still pretty popular dont you think.

The market for 4x4's, well it seems there is just as big a market for a 4x4 as there is for a car. If there was no market or the buying trend of silly people buying Kia Sorentos was on the decline and going out then the major big companies that make them would go out of buisiness. They must do market reasearch and know that there will always be silly people that will buy them.

Anyway Merry Christmas, or is it bah humbug ?

Don't allow twin axles on site? Never had that before, length may be a problem (oh matron!), but the number of wheels shouldn't be a concern. That is, unless you know better, forum readers?

Some commercial sites do have a blanket ban on twin axles but they're not numerous.

Some years back the rumours spread that French sites would not allow twin axles on.

TA's being associated with French "traveller" communities !

This was the case on mainly municipal sites and did not affect holiday makers as far as I know.

We've never had a problem with our TA's any where and have even been on a terraced site with 4 foot of van hanging over the terrace below ! (jacks used instead of steadies}

Caravan Club ask, one axle or two on the booking form. and they do say on some sites size may be a problem. I can only think this may be because it keeps the neigbours awake !!!!

Danny; spot on! I couldn't agree more. I have been annoyed at how people's other 'soap box' items (e.g. Green things; save the planet etc) have totally dominated this caravan forum. The fact of the matter is, for the foreseeable future big large cars and motorcycles are with us. The fact that some are 4x4 is quite irrelevant but people do like to use it in an attempt to get their point across.

In general, I think that we are ALL becoming much more 'emissions' and 'waste' conscious; and this is good. However, I do find it sheer hierocracy to continue to read postings from people who will berate you for owing a 4x4 and yet those same people will quite happily drive fast executive saloons which will consume a similar amount of fuel and yet have half the carrying and towing capacity of a modern 4x4.

I suppose some people view them as status symbols, rather than whether they actually need them. A bit like older men having young blond wives don't you think???? Or was that older women with young boys???

Come on it is Xmas and I did ask Santa for a Pamela Anderson calendar, but of course I would run a mile from the real thing.

Certainly I am in that timescale.

But I am game!!! Trouble is SWIMBO thinks it is game for a laugh.

There is no justice in this world.

Euro, I have a friend who runs a CL.He won't have twin axles on his site because of the damage they do to the grass when turning!

We don't do CL's, and in all the years I've had a TA I've never "ripped" up any ones grass and have done less damage than many with 2WD towing at or around the limit.

I think your friend needs to get real ;)

I think the old song "It aint what you got it's the way that you do it, that's what get's results" is just so appropriate here.

Like Euro I have a T/A van and have never needed to "rip up grass" to get parked as I turn in quite wide arcs. As for choice of car I've said before It's down to personal circumstance and choice. I have a plain old family front wheel drive estate car that was made in France. Oh and it doesn't get stuck towing the van.

There will always be those who feel that they have to justify their gas guzzler, be it 4X4 or a Limo. They quite amuse me as they often can only resort to I have one because I can.

Steve.

I was just making the point that on grassy field sites a vehicle hunting for traction can cause as much damage or more than a T/A rig that many tow with 4WD.

Grass damage is also a point of site manners.

Grass is quite forgiving, as with golf or polo if you cut it up stamp it back flat and even water it.

Come on everyone, can we not see that the whole eco lobby thing has one aim - to increase our taxes with minimun of opposition. There has been a war waged against 4x4s for a cuople of years now and with just enough hatred whipped up our chancellor bowed to the pressure of the masses and vowed to cut down on 4x4x use by increasing the VED by

Well done, well said and well written Millies Dad.

You have put the real issue into words exactly.

I wish I had your verbal ability.

Excellent - truly excellent.

One posting has had to be removed, and unfortunately also the reply to that particular posting, which was not offensive, but became nonsensical.

Users are reminded that personal abuse of other members will not be tolerated, and should this happen in this thread again, the whole thread will be removed.

The 4x4 debate seems to always degenerate into personal abuse of others, for some very stange reason.

Please just accept that individual people have their own likes and dislikes, as with everything, and keep personal insults out of the forums.

At the end of the day, each person will drive whatever form of transport suits them, and it is of no concern to anyone else, unless it is adversely directly impacting on your life.

Remember it is NOT just 4x4's which are subject to the incease in road tax based on emmissions, but a whole lot more vehicles as well. It is NOT just 4x4's which are being stung by the increase in fuel duty, it is EVERY car on the road.

I have re posted my comments from yesterday for which i am very grateful to Clive V for your comments.

Could someone please read it and explain why this was removed?

I have stated how i feel about the debate and cannot see how this can be offensive to anyone.

It seems we really are in a police state

Millies Dad, your original message has not been deleted.

You posted it as a comment, and as such will not show on the main board, but under the reply by Euro on 9/12/06 @10.41.

Millies Dad,

The Mod is correct and did a very fair job, there was a very rude response to your post.I left a polite but curt reply bringing the matter top of pile and the Mod dropped his brandy staggered on shaky legs to the key board and acted for the good of all.
