Hi I've just aquired an ABi Debutante caravan in really smart condition, however it has had a slight damp problem at some time in its life and I'm wondering which is the best way to resolve it. Not entirely sure where the damp patch started from (it does feel dry presently)as I have not had the time to mount a full investigation. Two of the interior roof panels have buckled slightly and I was wondering before I started dismantling anything are these panels (or similar available). I am a relative newcomer to caravans so any advice would be gratefully recieved.Thank you.

Hi Hugh,

Evidence of Damp is usually unfortunate news, unless you know the full history. There is no simple way of knowing what damage may have been done or started without stripping the affected areas.

As with flat roofs, the point where the leak is apparent from inside, may not correspond with position of the leak, so simple exposing the apparently affected area may not reveal the leak point.

ABI have not manufacture touring caravans for several years now, so the availability of matching materials will be diminishing.

I know a couple of people who had caravans (out of guarantee) who decided to try and rectify damp issues themselves. Both were astonished at how far they needed to strip the caravan back to expose the full extent of the damp problem, and jobs they had though may be a month of weekends turned out be about ten weeks.

I strongly suggest that you let a professional repair centre give their opinion. They will have expertise and access to a wide range of materials for repairs.

which part of the caravan is the damp to, are the boards soft when you put pressure on them ?visually is there any staining or damp marks on the boards knock the boards to see how soild they are .if i was you get a damp check done on it asp ,water can get in anywhere it gets in from outside through a rail window seal awning rail it could be any of these,i would defiantly seek a damp test before it gets to bad this is the only way you can find out where the damp comeing from .as for repairs it depends on how far the damp has gone.
