Hello everyone
Any with any advice or experience of using a portable air conditioner unit in a caravan advantages and disadvantages thanks

Forget it as you need a window open for the ducting which then defeats the purpose of having an air con. Bite the bullet and get a Dometic Freshjet or Truma Air ccon installed.

Hi,

Air conditioners in caravans are not all their cracked up to be. At least with a portable one if its not as effective as you want, you can at least use it at home.

Have you had a look at Cool my Camper. Not cheap but may be cheaper than installation. I haven't got one so couldn't say if it is any good.

The negatives are ,they are heavy so takes away your contents allowance weight wise ,they are hugely energy inefficient and greedy ,but as Profjohnl says you can always take it home .

Hello Durt,
I cant agree with your comment "they are hugely energy inefficient and greedy " By their nature they move more heat energy than they use, so in my view efficiency is not the issue, The biggest problem is they are expected to cool a large volume with a very restricted power availability. (circa 3kW) This simply not enough to make a a big impact on the solar gain a caravan experiences. I was involved with a research project looking at AC in caravans, and our conclusion was there was almost as much comfort improvement with an oscillating fan.

I put a portable airconditioner in our awning with the exhaust piped out under the side skirting.
It worked well and in the evening i pointed it towards the open caravan door.
It made a nice difference in temperatures up to 30C.
