Do you think people should put their alarms on when pitched up? then go out for the day, alarm going on and off all day long, annoying other people. Then come back and not even, I'm sorry, Oh!! I thought it might have gone off!! Liz

Hi Liz

If an alarm is fitted then it should be set whenever the caravan is left unattended. Ones insurers can refuse to settle a claim in some cases if this is not done, as some discount may be earned for having an alarm. My alarm is a Concept Kel which if it goes into alarm for any reason will reset after 2 minutes. This then leaves a code on the control box to say what caused the alarm.I dont believe it will go back into alarm until it is cancelled and reset.

Regards Jim

To Jim C, I understand that you should put alarm on when van is unattended, but have you ever sat next to a van all day, with the alarm going off. The site here is full of tourers being half term, I don't think their would be any chance their van would be stolen, being hitch lock was on, wheel lock on, no need for alarm ON? Liz

Hi Liz been there taped foam over external sounder to alleviate wrath of rally steward as owners out a long time!

The CC insurers insist that alarms should be set if the van is left unattended.

We were at Warwick and a very irregular alarm was going off.

We decided that the dog left in the motorhome was sitting on the horn ring!!

To Watson(JohnG) I understand, but not even a sorry when they returned, thats what upset me more. Very quiet peacefull site here, very unusual for alarms going off, everyone that comes never puts on alarms, if only they had said, off for the day, I would have only been too pleased to look after their van. I might have understood if dog had been left in van and sat on horn. I did kick his wheel lock that stopped it for 2 seconds. Liz

I wish people wouldn't set their car alarms on sites at night. Getting woken up by an oversensitive motion sensor is not nice. We don't even lock our car, and we chose not to have an alarm.

And to anyone travelling on the Isle of Wight ferry at the same time as me - please don't set your car alarm, as Wightlink car crime is unheard of. Most peaceful crossings of the Solent are shattered by several car alarms upset by the motion of the boat.

Like wise no need for alarms on vans or cars, we never lock our car. We respect other people, we know how annoying this can be. Liz

I have to admit I took my alarm off a long while ago for this very reason .But some insurance policies are not valid with no alarm activated if the caravan is left unattended . The trouble is how do you set these sencors so that it will go off if the caravan is moved but not go off if a high wind or a ball moves the caravan.

Our Senator Oklahoma has an alarm which we (frankly) don't bother with; it makes an annoying little noise that wouldn't deter a fly (IMHO). Yesterday I had a Reich mover fitted; the guy had to disconnect the battery; but when he reconnected it - off went the alarm... and did I know the number?.... and was it the default number? - "no" to both!! I ended up phoning Bailey who passed me to the manufacturers; whose only solution was "Send back the unit and we can re-program it for

We have had alarms on our last 2 caravans they have never false triggered they have gone off if we have been careless once or twice ie left something that could move around in front of the sensor but you cannot blame the alarm for that.

We like the extra security you start adding up the things that you take in a van and every bit of security helps.

Hello eric caravanning 4u

We have mobile phones, wireless networks (Broadband), you would think by now, they would make alarms only to go off when door/windows or caravan is moved. Liz

Hello Steve, I understand people want to protect all their gear, with laptops, tv's mobiles etc. This part of the country where I live crime rate is very low. I am able to leave car, caravan, house unlocked with no worries. Please see my comment I made to eric. Liz

My last two vans have alarms fitted standard. I have never had it triggered incorrectly either on site or at home on drive. My insurer [CC] say if alarm is fitted it must be set when van empty. I can only think if they are going off unnecessarily they are set up incorrectly and I can sympathise with you. we have a neighbour with a house alarm that goes off on a breezy day! Mnie never does! However if CC say I am not insured without I will always set it.

However if I were to return and find you poppong round on site to advise it went off with no visible attempt at theft being made I would most certainly have it checked out for faults. And of course ply you with copious amounts of a red or white liquid for your inconvenience!!! At least if the false alarm was repeated you would then sleep through it!!

Not to get at any one

So weeks a go I hard of a van diver who left is keys in the van when. He went in to the shop to sort out there order is van was nick.

He told the insure what had happed.

Insure said he shod have not have left is keys in the van and they would not be pay up on this one.

I bet it would be the same if you did not have the alarm on the caravan when you were not in it.

From my understanding of the instructions for the alarms fitted to Series 5 Bailey Senators the alarm would only sound for 20 minutes anyway. In order to comply with what an Insurer would expect I do set my alarm when going off site. I did initially experience some problems at home with one of two youngsters getting fun from kicking the front of the caravan in order to set the alarm off and overcame it by switching off the tilt sensor and only having the PIR sensor activated and that solved the problem. I can not believe that the impact of a ball on site hitting the caravan would be as great as someone trying to kick the front of the caravan hard so I do use both sensors when being away from the caravan on site. The only time the alarm has gone off unexpectedly was when I tried to go part of the way into the caravan to retrieve an item without switching the alarm off and set off the PIR sensor.

I replaced the Bailey alarm with one that will switch the outside light on when the alarm is armed/disarmed and is remote operated.

It only goes off for about 2 minutes but as has been said before I am required by CC insurance to arm the alarm when the van is left unattended or the insurance is invalid.

If I sometimes forget to arm the alarm and its on one of these occasions that the van is stolen how do I remember if I forgot

or do I tell the insurers that I forgot or not ???

It is possible easily to adjust the shock sensor.

I can't understand why alarms are going off at night when people would be asleep in the van .

We had an old (85) friend next to us in Sarzeau this year and his new car alarm kept going off during the day much to his consternation and general amusement with shouts of derision and talk of an ASBO and tagging .

Liz,

I have phantom tracker fitted, I also had the movement alarm as an extra, this alarm is silent, monitored from an office somwhere, if the van moves they contact you on the mobile phone,it costs a few bob but the noise problem never arises, and at least some one takes notice when the thing goes off. I moved the van on the drive yesterday, having forgotten to switch the alarm off, I think it took about thirty seconds and they where on the phone checking everything was ok.

Hi Davidc

Red or White liquid would be much appreciated, you can come to this site anytime you like and your alarm can go off as much as you like, as long as the liquid keeps on coming!!! Liz

Perhaps they were testing out Alarm for vibration!!!

Better than a Do not Disturb Sign!!! Liz
