Can anyone tell me if it is possible to use a normal car alarm of some sort in a caravan (provided I have a power supply of course)

I guess you could use a car alarm, but insurers usually required either a tilt sensor and/ or some form of sensor which will detect movement on the steady legs, which I don't think would be part of a standard car system (could be wrong, haven't fitted one for years). Those designed for caravans are easy to DIY fit if you are moderately handy. Have a look at the SAS website and those of other makers.

Hi,

You could use a car alarm but it might need modifying. The one in my Fleetwood is fitted as standard and is a modified motorcycle alarm. I have a movement sensor in the van (not difficult) but the alarm sounds if the mains lead is unplugged, if the mains lead is plugged in or if the car is started with the alarm set. These are probably not standard on a car alarm.

A car alarm will also detect the courtesy light coming on by sensing the voltage drop, so you'll get a similar effect when disconnecting the mains cable or running the engine if the alarm is set.

gary, as has been stated a car system would probably work even if it needs a bit of modifying after all something is better than nothing!! but just as a suggestion, try a motorbike system too, they have tilt and movement sensors so that the bike can't be lifted off the stand or the front wheel lifted to push up into a van.
