Hello to everyone old and new, we have been following the forum for a number of years now, and can only say that everyday we still learn something new. We are not strictly newbies, as we have been caravanners on and off for the last 8 years, (a motor accident interrupted our life style) and we started again last June.
This August will be our first venture across the channel with a caravan (or under it in our case !), and the sites are booked, the routes are planned and everything is going to plan. However SWMBO has realised that we may not be able to get anything out of the TV (she says that she is only thinking of the children if we have some inclement weather).
We use a portable TV with built in freeview, and the van is fitted with the Status 530 Directional Antenna, can someone please advise what additional equipment if any I will require to keep everyone happy during our trip.

Hi again mikeandsambo might be better to post your question in equipment and accessories where more people will see it, or you could wait for Parksy to transfer it for you, sorry I cant answer your question I havent been brave enough to venture abroad yet

Hello Mike and Sam, welcome to the Practical Caravan forum and I'm not sure if this is your first post but if it is then well done for becoming an active member rather than a lurker.

If you ask your question on the Overseas Parks and Touring message board I'm sure that you will receive lots of good replies which will tell you exactly what you want to know and where to get the best equipment from for the least amount of money

I'm not a continental visitor myself at the moment but I think that Lidl sometimes do a reasonably priced satellite dish as a special offer that would do the job for you.

Hi M&S. Can't help with the TV question, as we don't even have one at home, but well done on venturing across the channel for the first time! I'm sure you'll love it, and if your experience is anything like ours (now veterans of many trips, inc Denmark & Sweden), you'll find so much to do, and meet so many lovely folks that you won't have time to watch telly!

I've just read your post again, and realise that you have children. What age are they, as I remember the story about a couple, like yourselves, taking kids to France for the first time, and were worried about the language barrier. On the first day in France, they heard childrens laughter, and looked out to find their two playing merrily with two French kids. The parents asked how they could understand the French kids, as they didn't speak English. "No" said the very wise six-year-old " but they laugh in English!" Just go, and enjoy.

Hi Emmerson,

Thanks for the response. We have three boys,16,12 and 7, and I am ashamed to say that even the youngest has a better command of the French language than I.
We went to France two years ago for the first time (without a caravan), and we managed to make ourselves understood.

Hello and welcome and I must say, you're very brave to tow abroad. I can't even manage to parallel park without breaking into a sweat convinced all are watching me. Have not yet taken the plunge to tow as would like to do a towing course first. OH more than confident as he used to drive a submarine! Hope you and your family have many weeks of fun caravanning! Lisa and John.
