Another Tyres Question

Hi all

One of my first jobs on taking delivery of the new (to us) caravan was checking the tyres: I found the date codes in the standard format (3920) on the road wheels really easily, but when I dragged the spare wheel out I couldn't find any group of numbers that looked like that format.

I found a type number, CR-966, which matches with a specialist caravan/trailer tyre type made by Maxxis, which tallies with the manufacturer's marking on the tyre, but I can't find anything on their website about year codes other than the normal four-digit format.

Does anyone have any experience of these tyres that could advise on what to look for?

The caravan is from 2009 so the spare tyre may well be of the same vintage.

I would suspect the tyre is the original and a look at the tread should show if this has been used. Probably better to replace it given the potential age.

I think you're right - I've also emailed Maxxis, but no response as yet. The tread wear suggests the tyre has never even hit the road, but if as you suggest it's the original that's no comfort!

If I don't get a response soon that reassures me that the tyre is within reasonable age, I'll be replacing - it's more curiosity than anything else!

It's a steel spare wheel (road wheels are alloys) which is in exactly the condition you'd expect for a steel wheel that's been in an underslung carrier since 2009, so I plan to wire brush and paint it at some time, so I'll replace the tyre at the same time.

I found the underslung carrier tended to put pressure marks into the sidewall of the spare tyre. Because it’s a faff to remove for pressure testing and inflating as well as when required for a puncture I decided to sell it and carry the spare in the caravan.

Yes, in my time caravanning I've only ever had one puncture and that was in a van with an underslung carrier: It was harder work getting the spare out from under the van (which was, of course, low on the side where the carrier comes out, because of the puncture), than it was jacking the van up and changing the wheel!

I may well do that, the only thing is that the underslung gets the weight of the spare closer to the axle than I could achieve inside the caravan.

I have done the same, stowed the wheel carrier behind the garden shed. The spare wheel sits in the same place position wise under the side bed of our Coachman 560, but above the axle. And I can easily check the tyre pressure.

Hi
As far as I am aware the trailermaxx tyres have the date on one side, the side with more information as picture, this tyre will ever go on the road as its a spare for a yard trailer the date is the highlighlighted bitIMG_20220628_171759_resized_20220628_052010486.jpg

Thanks Gralay, that gives me a bit more to go on - I was looking for a standalone 4 digit code so next time I visit the storage site I'll look again for something like this.

OK new question - although it's related so I'll keep it in the same thread.

A couple of years ago PC carried an article by Nigel Hutson when he fitted a spare wheel mounting bracket inside the caravan - the article is on the PC website here:

Any idea where I can get one of these now? Nigel says he got his from Yorkshire Caravans but I can't find it on their web site anywhere.
