Hi All
Perhaps this isn't the best forum to ask this question but does anyone know what might be causing a problem with Internet Explorer 8.
There is one website that until about a month ago I was able to access from my Favourites list. It's The Scout Association. No matter which way I try to access the site I get the message that Internet Explorer could not display the web page. I don't have a problem with any other website regardless of route to it. My first, and obvious thought was that the site itself is down but I know this is not so and I can, in fact, access it through my lap top.
I've tried resetting I.E. but that has made no difference. A far as I'm aware I did nothing about a month ago that could have caused the problem.
Any help would be very welcome.

If you are only have this problem with one website, then it is unlikely to be your computer but the website in question. If you could see the scouts webpage you would find this at the bottom "© Copyright 2012. The Scout Association. All Rights Reserved. Gilwell Park, Chingford, London E4 7QW". It looks like they have updated the website.
My suggestion is to dump IE8 and install a proper modern browser, Firefox, Opera, Chrome. Anything but any IE browser.

I am running Firefox and went on to the Scout Association with no problem.
My wife is an appointment secretary for the local Scout distict and has never had any problem getting on to the site.

Thanks to all who have responded so far.
If I enter the full www.scouts.org.uk or Google 'Scouts' I get exactly the same message 'IE can't display the web page'. As I said in my original post, I can get into the site on my laptop, it's only my desktop PC that I'm having trouble with.
I've tried Lord B's suggestion but that doesn't work either.
Grrrrrrrrrrr!

Have just installed Firefox and been able to get onto the Scout Association without problem. Must have been something to do with I.E. 8

All down to the codeing, HTML, some browsersers interpret better than others. You used to find that most web developers codeing was most compatible with IE because the codeing followed the set standard but now we have numerious browsers and add ons for HTML, each and every browser can and doses interpret the code sometimes with strange outcomes. With internet banking, some browsers are better and more secure than others. Answer, try useing a different browser for the site you are having problems with and swop between browersers for different sites if needed. Example, some users of IE9 have had problems useing this site, ask Parksy, he has answered more than one question about that.

Sorry, but I think you got that the wrong way round, most websites were coded for IE which had its own standards, websites are now starting to be coded to the proper standards and Microsoft being Microsoft are still trying to set the standards, hence the problems with IE9 etc. As I said, just use a proper modern browser, anything but IE.

Spot-on - IE was non-compliant but dominant so websites had to ignroe some standards and code specifically for IE, but now more standards-compliant browsers are used such as Firefox and Chrome websites may more readily support them and not IE.

Hi, You could try running the affected website using Compatibility Mode of Internet Explorer 8. To do this, Click on 'Tools,' then Compatibility View. This works for several 'quirks,' and may be worth a try.
Enjoy your holidays,

I have my pc in house virgin is my isp and use the outlook express. but I have a laptop which I use more so I don't get my outlook express. but on virgin you can look at all emails that go into outlook express... so on my laptop if I go into virgin emails that is when I get the message of taking them off the compatability view.... if I want to see emails differntly.

I have bother to do this so I have no idea what the emails should look like thats all..
hope this is logical

Just a few more questions
What version of windows is on the pc?

What version of windows is on the laptop?

I take it that you are using internet explorer to see the emails on Virgin (this is known as webmail), if so what version of internet explorer is on the laptop and is it the same version on the pc and do you have the same problem on the pc.
