Any thoughts/views on low voltage hair dryers and low voltage straighteners?????

Has anyone any views on using a low voltage hair dryer in their caravan/motorhome? I have a dual voltage one I bought for use in the USA (110v) I believe, or should I buy one labelled specifically 'caravan/motorhome' low voltage hairdryer????

Also, has anyone bought and used or could recommended a reasonably priced pair of ceramic straighteners to use in the van or are normal ones deemed OK if say I turn off the tv, radio and microwave before use???????

Thoughts please as I really do have to straighten my hair and would prefer not to do it in front of an audience in the public washrooms!

Hi Lisa
My o/h has hair to her shoulders and uses a 'normal' hair-dryer but she said that it's not a heavy duty hairdresser type dryer when we're on ehu.
She doesn't use hair straighteners but uses an electric curling thingy, again with no problems when on ehu. (electric hook up)
To be on the safe side we turn all other 240v appliances including the water heater off when she dries her hair.
When we're on a rally with no 240v she uses a gas cartridge curling thing (wand?) and a low wattage travel hair-dryer via a 12v/240v inverter (so in effect her hair-dryer runs off the leisure battery which is charged via a solar panel).

Sorry Lisa, forgot to add that it's fun buying things 'for the caravan' but anything which is labelled 'caravan' such as 'caravan hair dryer' always costs more.
It's often better to check out the Argos catalogue, look in Wilkinsons and even low cost pound shops where many of the things that are sold in caravan accessory shops can be bought at a much lower price.

i never have a problem with my hair dryer on uk sites and im sure my sister plugged her straigtners in my van and it was fine, just dont have everything else on at the same time. like us on our first trip out in our van..........................

Thanks for all your advice, will prob take my normal hairdryer then and turn off everything when using straighteners (this will prob only apply to trips longer than a weekend). Thanks for your comments. Much appreciated as usual - Lisa.

Hi Lisa, you need to be careful, there is a BIG difference between low voltage as in 110v for use in America and low wattage, if you were to plug in 110v hair dryer in your caravan it would either fuse or probably blow up, your caravan will operate either 12 v if you have a 12 v socket or 240 volt but under no circumstances should you use 110 volt equipment of any description. BP
