Hi Richard
Like emmerson said, I go every year.
I've only stopped at Wild Rose once when the fair was on.
I would think very carefully about stopping there if you're not used to gypsies. When we stopped there (about five years ago I think), the touring site was packed with gypsies. We had no trouble, a couple of the blokes in the next caravan helped us put our awning up (four females). We had no trouble at all. The facilities were immaculate, they put extra staff on, or they did during the fair when we were there that time.
It depends on your attitude, my friend wasn't impressed and said she'd never go again. Some people let their dogs wander the site but were told to put the dogs on leads.
Depending on the weather, on the Saturday and Sunday if the weather is fine, Appleby itself will be packed. If you're not used to horses, please be careful. They are trotted at speed up and down the high street. They are washed in the river and tethered on mobile railings.
Recently, all the agencies have been working closely with the travelling community and Billy Welch has done an outstanding job representing the travelling community.
There is a massive police and RSPCA presence. Parking is not allowed near the river and horses and traps are not allowed over the bridge. The Sands (near the river), is usually closed to traffic between 9am and 5pm with access limited to emergency vehicles only. A one way system is enforced in the town.
Most of the gypsies put their caravans on fair hill. Up on fair hill you'll find stalls, fortune tellers, burger bars etc but it's about
