No, it's completely fascinating - or we found it so. The only problem is likely to be the extra traffic but Wild Rose is sufficiently out of Appleby not to be affected. You could completely avoid it by staying out of the town.

Richard, if you can stand the crowds, and like dogs and horses, this is an event not to be missed!Very exciting and colourful, but be well aware that it is a horse fair, and there'll be lots of them about. Not been for a few years myself, but LMH goes every year.

Hi Richard

Like emmerson said, I go every year.

I've only stopped at Wild Rose once when the fair was on.

I would think very carefully about stopping there if you're not used to gypsies. When we stopped there (about five years ago I think), the touring site was packed with gypsies. We had no trouble, a couple of the blokes in the next caravan helped us put our awning up (four females). We had no trouble at all. The facilities were immaculate, they put extra staff on, or they did during the fair when we were there that time.

It depends on your attitude, my friend wasn't impressed and said she'd never go again. Some people let their dogs wander the site but were told to put the dogs on leads.

Depending on the weather, on the Saturday and Sunday if the weather is fine, Appleby itself will be packed. If you're not used to horses, please be careful. They are trotted at speed up and down the high street. They are washed in the river and tethered on mobile railings.

Recently, all the agencies have been working closely with the travelling community and Billy Welch has done an outstanding job representing the travelling community.

There is a massive police and RSPCA presence. Parking is not allowed near the river and horses and traps are not allowed over the bridge. The Sands (near the river), is usually closed to traffic between 9am and 5pm with access limited to emergency vehicles only. A one way system is enforced in the town.

Most of the gypsies put their caravans on fair hill. Up on fair hill you'll find stalls, fortune tellers, burger bars etc but it's about

Sorry, it didn't occur to me that gypsies would actually be staying on the site at Wild Rose. We've stayed there, but never at the same time as the fair - we're near enough to drive up for the day from here. It was my mum's favourite site when she used to come with us - she loved it there.

Hi Richard

You should be fine, I just wanted to advise that if you haven't had much dealings with gypsies, you'll be in for a bit of a culture shock. From the girls in micro dresses and thigh length high heel boots to the odd chicken tied to a tow bar. LOL!

Please don't worry. As I say, I've never had any trouble in the past 20 odd years. I sometimes go by myself. Just take everything with a pinch of salt and laugh things off, such as in my case when they tell me: ('you shouldn't have a dog like that Mrs, it'll bite you'). Just smile sweetly.

I can understand why Val's mum loved it, it's a lovely site.

I'm stopping near Penrith again this year. We're arriving on the Tuesday after the BH for two weeks. Really looking forward to it.

Hope you have a great time.

Hi Richard

We did White Rose in 2004 during the Horse Fair.

Never had any problems, nor did I see any Gypsies on the site.

However all the pubs were closed over the weekend. There were people in the pubs but no members of the public could get in.

I found the pitches at White Rose quite cramped and tight to get into, otherwise everything was fine.

Cheers

Hi Dusty

I know they used to close some of the pubs in the old days but lately, they have been open all day and all night. In fact, last year and the year before we popped into Appleby on the Friday and Sunday night for a few. Took ages to get served as some of the blokes order in excess of 30 drinks at a time.

That's what I call a real man. LOL

As I say it was 6 years ago since I was there and I never felt threatened.

Cheers
