I currently tow our Abbey 318 with a Terrano 2.7Tdi and have found it to be excellent. However, due to an ongoing back problem I am finding using the clutch more and more difficult. I find the height of 4x4's just right for getting in and out of and want to change the Terrano for an automatic option, preferably diesel. I haven't done any research at present and don't even know if the Terrano has an automatic option. Any suggestions will be gratefully received. Thanks - Mal

Mal,

I've got (for the next few hours at least)a year 2000 Terrano 2,7tdi auto, top of the range (leather, roof bars etc). I'm trading it in this afternoon when I pick up a new Sedona, for the pitiful part/ex price of

Mal,

You don't say wether you are considering new or used - I had a 99 Terrano 2.7 Auto with all the bells and whistles but I think you can only buy a new one with manual transmission. You obviously like the Terrano but have you seriously considered other models. I put about 60K miles on mine and grew to dislike it for many rasons the chief being vauge steering, cramped interior, poor ride and poor economy.

I have since found that Shoguns, Troopers and Landcruisers do the job so much betterand are durable and dependable.

I have become an import fan because of the price/condition advantages and have experienced non of the "high insurance cost" or "difficulties with service and parts" that some misinformed people would have you believe are a bugbear with these models.

Have a look at an Pajero or Bighorn (Landcruisers and Surfs are excelent too but more expensive)from a reputable Importer and you will be amazed at what you can get for the money - Auto,Climate control, adjustable suspension, cruise control and low mileage - plus you don't need to go in convoy with your Breakdown organisation when venturing further than 10 miles.

When in a rush to get up the Pyrenees before dusk I was down to 10mpg towing with my Monterey 3.5V6. Normally it's about 18mpg when towing, otherwise 21. But then, it's a petrol.

If the Range Rover is of a "certain age" (they mature rather than get old!) - it will either be an Italian VM (very powerful but a bit agricultural), a TD300 or the BMW TD6 six cylinder.

All will achieve circa 30mpg with careful driving easily.

Hi,

I have an auto Sorento (5 speed) and would not go back to a manual. For normal use I get around 32mpg, with 22-23mpg towinga 1400kg Bailey.

Mal,

I tow my 03 Bailey Ranger with a 93 2.8 Pajero which is an automatic. Its a pleasure to drive and would reccomend the Paj's to anyone looking for a decent towcar.

I bought my Bighorn at JAPUK in Liss Hampshire - try japuk.co.uk - he gave me a good p/ex on my SWB Troop. His cars are all good quality and low miles but as for most importers they only do what is neccessary for the MOT and I gave mine an oil change and full service before towing or general use. Didn't find anything wrong though except a very dirty air filter and it's like driving a three year old car!

Hi Mal,

I too drive a Sorento (5 speed auto)and would recommend to you. The auto is also standard with the tiptronic option and can be driven like a manual. This is my second Sorento, first being a manual. The fuel consumption difference between the two is minimal with average low 30s mpg when not towing, and averaging low to mid 20s mpg (hoping this will improve!) when towing our Coachmam 520/4. A new Sorento is due shortly and Kia are offering some good deals on current model if you shop around.

Cheers

DJP
