Automatics

Has anyone got experience of diesel automatics (specifically Mondeos) and can comment on how good they are? I have a manual 2.0l Mondeo TDci, have just pulled my Pageant Vendee 1500 miles through France with it, and am fed up using the clutch so much. Would the auto version be up to the job?

Like you I own a manual TDCi and would prefer the auto, but a freind of my father has just bought one and says the mpg has dropped by over 6mpg over the manual version (not towing), so I'm reluctant to change....

Hi Denis - go for it! I tow with a BMW 525d Touring auto and it's the best tow car I've ever had. Due to the enormous torque of the diesel engine combined with the 5 speed auto box, it's always in the correct gear, acceleration is better than many solo cars, fuel economy is very good (37 mpg solo, 24 mpg towing) and switch on the cruise control at 60ish mph, and just steer! Dead easy!
