Bad Name for Caravanners

Today got caught up in a hold up on M5 at Junction 20 approx 2:15pm. Five vehicle pile up on north bound side. The crawler lane was marked closed by overhead gantry sign (red cross), the three outer lanes were restricted to 50mph. A grey Audi A6 "06" registered (CA reg. therefore from south east Wales.) estate with a new caravan on tow went belting up the closed lane and on reaching the accident tried to force his way out into the main stream of traffic in front of me. With the disaster of a weekend that I have just experienced I blasted him on the horn as I could not move out to the next lane and he was then forced to stay put until he could get out. I thought good enough for you as he had broken the law by driving passed three red stop crosses on the over head gantries. Thoght that he was above the law and to hell with the others driving in an orderly and legal manner. What would you have done in the circumstances?

As far as I'm concerned if I'm prepared to wait along with 100's of others so should those b*******. The lanes are kept clear for a purpose, to allow the emergency services access, not for those morons to queue jump.

Full marks Colin on your actions. All too often we are forced to defend caravaning before an ever inreasing predjudice and the mindless actions of p**ts like these only provide ammunition for our critics. Such a shame that the police did not see his stupidity.

When you get caught up in incidents like this, the only issue is safety. Despite the irresponsible actions of the Audi driver, I would rather he squeezed in front of me than add to a potentially dangerous situation by trying to make him wait. So he's gained a few hundred yards of tarmac and a mere minute or two-its not worth getting worked up about.

The same as you Colin, I wouldn't have given an inch ( you'll have to work that out for centimeters) my hand on horn, infact I would have blocked him all the way as much as possible caravan in tow or not.

Talking about pushing in, I think the norm now is to wait until you get to your junction, and only leave when you reached hazard lines and push your way in at the very last minutes which causes queues in the left hand lane. That really makes my blood boil when drivers let them in..

Hand on horn and standing ground all the time.

In my opinion we are all being subconsciously stressed as a result of our ever congested road network. I get this image of mild mannered individuals growing horns and pointy tails as soon as they get behind the wheel of a car.

I am not saying you should have let him in, but I would.

At Easter we went to Florida and the driving over there is an absolute pleasure and so relaxed, no queues, drive in whichever lane you want, two hard shoulders, loads of room and above all no 'rage'. You rarely if ever hear a horn tooted in anger or witness derogatory hand signals. If you find yourself in the wrong lane or committed to the wrong off-ramp you just pull over and some-one lets you in, you don't need to thank them and they don't feel the need to 'indicate' that you can pull in-it just happens.

Even my wife commented that people over in the US of A drive with a smile on their faces rather than a scowl.

I believe you have the wrong end of the stick Martyn, it has nothing to do with stress. It all boils down to good manners, something we were known about throughout the world. Anyone of my generation will tell you we were probably one of a few nations who actually queued, other places it was a free for all.

The difference is the Americans have taken over from us for being the leaders in etiquette. Americans suffer more stress levels than we do and if you believe otherwise we in this country have no hope. Oone thing that America is known for is psychologists and psychiatrists.

I have my opinions of why manners in this country have gone down the Swanee but that makes for another topic which I will save for when I get back.

OK, so you've traced him - probably breaching the DATA protection act - and you've named and shamed him. So what happens if it wasn't the owner who was driving?

As for reacting, yes we've all done it, but it doesn't help the situation. It just means there's two bad drivers on the road instead of one.

A smile and sarcastic shake of the head probably gets the message across more effectively.

Charles
