Bad water Taste

Hi posted this topic on the 23rd march about water taste on my new Abbey, and a posting by Thorpedo gave a link to similar discussions on Bailey Vans. For some reason I can't get the link to work now does anybody know where this may be as I would like to get the info as it looks as though I am going to have to do battle with the dealer as he is sticking with the contaminated water line even though it tasted foul first trip out, don't you just love swift group dealers??

The water has a sort of TCP taste when we used the new van for the first time. We thought it must be the site water. After trying a couple of other sites we have come to the conclusion that it must be a problem with the van water pipes. When water was used directly from the site tap it tasted OK, but when used from the aquaroll it had a horrible taste and smell. If the pipes were flushed for a long time some of the taste dissapeared but it was still not pleasant to drink.

I am going to contact the dealer to see if anyone else has the same problem with their new Bailey.

Has anyone come across this problem with their Bailey?

Graeme.

It is common with many makes and seems to emanate from the plastic water pipes they use.

For years now we have never used the water from the caravan taps/aquaroll, especially after seeing someone who thought it was "funny" to move a pump from the aquaroll to the waste water container!

We now always fill a Brita filter from the site tap for drinking and cooking purposes.

One possibility is that the water system may have been sterilized at the factory before they released the unit, as an ex water board employee all water pipes are sterilized prior to commissioning for health and safety, possibly the caravan manufacturers follow the same procedures.

I purchased our unit when it was only 9 months old and hardly used but I still ran some diluted Milton through all the water pipes prior to use, it will give off a sour taste for the first few weeks but then settles down.

Remember to remove your filter if you have one fitted prior to sterilizing and replace after flushing I keep an empty filter case just for that purpose.

The original filter I noticed on our van had green algae in it and as I say it was only nine months old and hardly used so change the filters often and each season do a sterilizing flush better safe than sorry.

We had the same trouble with our van, so i filled the aquaroll and sterilised that the night before we went away and kept it full until we got to the site. When we got there i ran the fluid through the system into the onboard tank and left it a couple of hours. Then i flushed the aquaroll out and filled with fresh water and ran it through the system and onboard tank, success, nice fresh water.

As Lancer says remember to remove the filter.

Thanks everyone. I used the same aquaroll that I have used on my vans for many years so I don't think the problem is there. I removed the water filter prior to flushing the whole system with weak Milton and then put about 5 fresh aquaroll's through the pipes. The water still tasted funny. When I got to the site I flushed the water system again with site water but it still had a bad taste. I tend to fill a small container straight from the site tap to use for kettle water and general drinking but the water that has been through the van pipes actually leaves a horrible TCP like smell on your hands when you wash them.

I have been on to the dealer and he siai that I was not the only person to have this problem with their new van and he has ordered a new set of pipes to replace all those on my van. I think they must have been a bad batch used by Bailey when the van was assembled.

is it possible the actual filter has been contaminated prior to leaving factory....that seems to me to be the only part of the system no cleaned

Graeme et al. this used to be a common problem on new 'vans some years ago. I thought that it had been solved, but obviously not completely!!

It is caused by plasticiser in the plastic pipes (to make the pipes more flexible) leaching out into the water as it passes through the pipes. Sterilising etc. will have no effect.

Your dealer is doing the correct thing in replacing all the water piping, but he needs to do a check to make sure that the replacement tubing doesn't suffer from the same problem; before he replaces the water pipes!!

We never ever drink from the aquaroll, simply dont trust the aquaroll and plastic pipes as being hygenic enough. We always take a 2 litre container and keep it in the fridge and either fill it from the tap on site or, if abroad, used bottled water.

Use the van taps for everything else, teeth cleaning, washing etc.

TBH if you are worried about the qulity of water and won't drink it direct from the tap, you probably shouldn't use it to clean teeth with.

Go back to your dealer and report this as a warranty issue. This is a known problem, the chemicals are laching out of the water pipes, no amount of flushing through will remove this taste.

Bailey's re aware of this problem and will replace all the water pipes in your van.

Just waiting for the pipes to be delivered to my dealer for them to replace them under warranty.

Thanks George. I have been back to the dealer and, as you said, it is a known problem. The dealer has ordered a full set of pipes to replace the ones on my van. There was some delay because some of the replacement pipes Bailey started to use were collapsing so they had to go to a different supplier.

How many of those Milton tablets do you use for steralising an Aquaroll?

Allyson, yes it is the pipe manufacturers problem, but as a buyer of a caravan, your contract is with the dealer, not the caravan manufacturer or pipe manufacturer(or appliance manufacturer), therefore any warranty work has to be directed at the dealer in the first instance.

He should put right whatever is wrong, and claim from the caravan manufacturer, who in turn claims from the, in this case, pipe manufacturer.

Complicated..... it is.

Hi Damain

But personally I think it's what you also clean your pipes out with that give that fowl taste the following year.

I never use Milton or any other baby sterilising product that's been recommended on this forum; I have only used the correct sterilising tablets recommend / sold at my caravan dealers.

I never used Milton on my childrens dummy's / bottle they was always steamed.

We never drink the water from the tap, we only shower in it and clean our teeth in it.

Tea / coffee is made from boiled bottle water.

Allyson, I have to disagree somewhat, I use Milton to sterlise my van water system and have never experienced foul tasting water.

UK water quality is second to none, and we use site supplies everywhere we go, with no taste problems whatsoever.

It has been proven in the past that bottled water actually contains more bacteria than plain ordinary tap water and we never use it for that reason.

A question regarding sterilising water pipes.

I have a screw-in water filter and so if I took it out (to perform sterilisation) surely the water would then just pour out of the hole ?

Do I need to have a dummy (or old) filter to do this ?

Thanks in advance :)

We do have a facts sheet that we can send to you if you contact us at enquiries@swiftleisure.co.uk.

In addition, I can confirm that all of the parts used in our water supply in the vans is of food grade quality.

The TCP taste you are getting is coming from some inferior quality water pipes. When plastics are made a chemical called phenol is involved, in a sites water supply chlorine is used by the water treatment company to disinfect the water mains system .When phenol and chlorine are mixed together the end result is a TCP taste TCP stands for trichlrophenol .It is therefore vital that only food grade plastics are used in not only caravans but any where that is used for drinking. Garden hoses, watering cans etc are not advised under any situation. I hope this isn't too scientific but if you don't understand any of this please post back and I will answer your questions shortly. Hope this helps!

We had this problem with our then new Ranger 550/6, this was last July, the dealer replaced the pipes with new and at a later date the caravan flooded because they had fitted the wrong pipes. It went back for repair and in October last year it flooded again, so back it went again, Bailey said the van was knackered so the dealer gave us a new van and we picked it up in January.............. All because of the TCP taste and smell. I know of two other Bailey owners with new vans with the same water related problems.

Rubix, if you have the Crystal 2 then with an old filter, take the filter apart keeping just the end screw in part and use that as a blanking plug whilst sterilising.

Thanks Damian, I was considering buying one of theose filters you can re-use by refilling the filter stuff, but your idea is much cheaper, as long as the seal is working, hey presto job done.

Thanks again.

The classic TCP taste is definitely a problem with the pipes, and the only solution is to have the pipes replaced.

It can be pot luck, as the dealers new pipes may also be affected.

It continues to amaze me, that caravan manufacturers continue to use materials that have an unreliable track record (TCP taste has been a problem for over 15 Years in the flexible pipes they specify), and yet the mains water industry has been using blue plastic pipes (admittedly less flexible) for years without problems!

More recently, white plastic pipes are being installed in homes, again without significant problems.

Hi,

There's been a few inaccuracies in the attribution of TCP taste, one of which could cause unnecessary worry:

A whole range of Chlorinated compounds (indeed almost all of them) have a taste similar to TCP, and just because the water tastes like diluted TCP - doesn't mean that TCP was the cause. Indeed there's no reason that TCP would be in the plastic tubing or in the water supply.

Phenol was mentioned as a possible cause, but this compound is extremely toxic and a potential carcinogen, and is never, ever found in plastics. Maybe too technical, but the reason for correcting this statement is that if you Googled Phenol you'd see the warnings about it's toxicity and carcinogenic properties - and it's not something you should be worried about - because it's not there.

I'll certainly admit that it's easy to become worried by the similar sounding names of all these compounds, but understanding the differences and the risks or absence of risk requires more than would be sensible on this forum.

The most common causes of taint are:

1. non-Chlorinated plasticisers commonly used to make plastic tubing supple (even food grade) that unexpectedly leach out of the tubing walls. Many of these plasticisers also taste like TCP and if you've even drunk water from a PVC hose-pipe on a hot day you'll know all about it.

2. Chlorine based sterilisers (bleach) reacting with these same plasticisers whilst they are still inside the tubing wall, these chlorinated plasticiser compounds can (depends on your genetic make-up) taste between a thousand and a million times stronger than the unaltered compound. A minute amount of the Chlorinated plasticiser leaches out and you instantly notice the taste.

3. Chlorine based sterilisers (bleach) reacting with organic compounds in the water supply - this can be a problem in some areas of the UK where the natural water supply has a high level of organic compounds. Water that has flowed across peat is a very good example - especially because these waters are acid - and these compounds can soak into the plastic tubing causing the taint to linger.

Note: Chlorine based sterilisers (Milton, home brew sterilising tablets, etc) normally don't create a problem - Chlorine isn't the active bleaching agent - but if the water is acid, then Chlorine is released and then the taint problems occur.

One way to contaminate your water system is to sterilise with Chlorine bleach and then visit a remote part of (for example) Scotland with naturally peaty and acid water - When you could have totally circumvented this problem by flushing out the bleach with your own household supply.

An alternative that never causes taint, but which is not so efficient - so you need to use more - is to swap from a Chlorine based steriliser to a Oxygen based steriliser (Hydrogen Peroxide) - a home brew supplies shop or local chemists should be able to help.

I always used to use Milton to sterilise the water system, but since having all the pipes replaced on my caravan due to TCP tasting water I have decided to try something different. I have got some puriclean which has the active ingredient as Sodium Dichloroisocyanurate. Has anyone used this before?

Graeme,

Sodium Dichloroisocyanurate is a real Chlorine steriliser - I'd suggest you stop using it immediately.

At least Milton is an Oxychloride steriliser - where the active ingredient is a compound of Oxygen and Chlorine. Unless you use Milton in acid water - which decomposes the Oxychloride compound into a Chlorine bleach.

Sodium Dichloroisocyanurate reacts instantly with water to release Chlorine - it's very good at sterilising dirty, polluted pond water when you're hacking through the jungle - but it's way to vigorous for caravan plastic water systems.

Robert, thanks for that info. I have not used the puriclean yet - even though I bought it from my local caravan shop recently. I will try something different.

I have just had my pipes changed under warrenty as the kitchen tap water was foul tasting. I was told that it is a chemical reaction of the pipe. Apparantly the pipe is delivered on a large drum and the sun has a chemical reaction with the outer few coils of the pipe prior to use. Whether this is correct or not I do not know but apparantly Bailey have had quite a few recalls because of the pipework. Now everything is OK so I would suggest that you have the pipes changed under warrenty from the manufacturer.

I've got a series 6 Bailey Pageant with this problem. Had a word with my dealer who has has been supplied with some hydrogen peroxide steriliser from Baileys to try and solve the problem without changing the pipework. As the dealer is 50 odd mile from where I live I've just managed to get a litre of the stuff direct from the suppliers (arrived today) to try it out (http://www.aquadosa.com/) It's bloody expensive though at
