Took my spare from under van ( first van I've had with storage underneath) anyway tried getting it back but impossible as alko frame won't let me slide it back, do you need to jack itbuo or something, also there are two bolts on rack I presume the wheel slots onto these ,

The spare wheel holder slide tubes need greasing and can be difficult to keep aligned when fully extended. The wheel needs to be bolted to the frame.

Should have explained !!!!!! I took my spare off as ATS were coming out to change all my tyres, thought I would have it all ready for bloke, after tyres were changed I put van back on drive exactly in the same position as when I took off spare, but on placing wheel back onto rack, it won't slide back due to the underneath frame preventing it, looks like the van needs to be higher, although it all seems to be the same as before, on the other hand, how would you manage getting spare from underneath with a flat tyre, !!!!!! As the caravan frame would prevent you pulling it out, ( forgive me but never had a tyre stored bellow )

Just raise the front steadies and wind the nosewheel down - that'll lift the rear up to give more room to put the spare away.

Just a thought, ATS did fit the same size tyres didn't they? If they fitted lower profile then the chassis will be nearer the ground.

You dont...........call your breakdown provider and let them do it, especially if you are on the road.

The underslung carrier is probably one of the worst designed items going.

Do yourself a favour and remove the wheel, my senator took the wheel in the front locker.

While my valencia holds the spare under the bed.
I have two alko carriers in the loft, which is the best place for them, IMO.

Actually the original tyres had 62psi in, whereas these have the correct pressure of 42psi, so would that make a difference then.

These carriers are a liability. Sometimes you can get the wheel back in place by pulling the carrier to the rear of the van and pushing hard until the wheel has gone under the chassis then move the carrier forward again until it lines up with its retaining holes. Sometimes if you have a puncture its necessary to put a ramp under the affected wheel and pull the van up the ramp. I gave up on the carrier years ago. As we travelled abroad I didn't want to risk having to extract a spare wheel with me on the side of the van with traffic. So I carried the wheel in the van and have done so ever since even though the Pageant could accommodate it in its front locker. Too much regard for my back. The spare travels mid ships in the van so noseweight is unaffected and sits under the van when on site chained to the chassis.

Our Lunar was new in the summer last year. The first thing I did when I had it was to try to remove the spare wheel from the underslung carrier. I couldn't get the wheel out without jacking the van up, so within a week I had taken the carrier off, with the wheel travelling inside the van on the floor, virtually above where the carrier was so no balance changes. As otherclive does, it sits under the van on the ground chained to the chassis when the van is in use.

How I miss my previous van (Avondale) with the through-floor wheel storage and the mid-ship gas locker.

The unicorn 2 has the gas locker over the axle now, along with a redesigned wheel carrier.
I also noticed at a dealers that a swift with the fixed bed stored the wheel under the bed.
Removing the carrier also gives around a extra 7kg load margin, the old design that is.

When I had my Astra, I was towing at 97% MTPLM:kerb so to reduce the actual ratio,I removed the carrier and the spare and took the spare in the car boot - with more recent cars with better towing ratios I haven't bothered and don't have any issue getting the spare in or out.
Raising the caravan up after a puncture is inevitable, regardless of where the spare is - by the time the caravan is high enough to fit a fully inflated wheel/tyre there's plenty of room to get the spare out from under the floor!
