Bailey Valencia _ Damp problems?

Can anyone on the forum advise me please. We had our Elddis Crusader Cyclone stolen in march of this year by travellers despite all the security devices I could think of including a Phantom alarm and a solar panel to keep it powered! The van was recovered because of the tracker on board but due to other problems which I wont go into here, we have decided to go for a smaller van, less attractive to this scum.
We are thinking of a Bailey Unicorn Valencia but I am alarmed by reports on the web re damp in the front lockers of relatively new Bailey caravans! Can anyone help with this. Is this a general problem with these vans or indeed with Bailey? This will be our first Bailey and I have been to hell and back since March and if I didnt enjoy the freedom of caravanning so much I would have thrown the towel in months ago. So please, if you know anything, please divulge it. Any information, both positive and negative would be appreciated.

We have a bailey Pegasus which is now in its third season. No sign of any leaks and we are very pleased with the design and standard of build. Much better than our last van made by another builder that had too many problems to list including bad damp after 3 years.
I was fortunate enough to go on a Bailey factory tour at the end of July and was most impressed with the whole operation. We spent 3 hours touring the factory and having all stages of the build explained to us by the recently retired Production Director who accompanied us and also had a half hour introduction and question and answer session with the MD. Bailey are currently producing vans at the rate of 7,500 per year with a staff of 350 so they must be doing something right. As with most things in life you will hear from the few people who do have problems, but the large majority of owners will either not comment on forums or not even know that forums exist. The equipement used by Bailey at most stages of the build of the wall roofis very sufisticated state of the art computer controlled machinery.

Hi Merve

The problem with web sites is the very smal minority post a bad comment and we all panic!

The major caravan manufacturers are now giving 10 years water ingress guarantees subject to T&Cs plus a one off cost. That says something very positive to me.

The key issue I believe is finding aa first class well respected dealer who will deal with any issues in a professional and speedy way. Customer service comes first.

Where abouts are you? Some of us can then suggest good dealers.

Hi Merve
I posted a reply to your topic earlier today, but did not finish it or check spelling as I had to take the dogs for their morning walk.
2 additional comments. Firstly I am not connected in anyway with the caravan trade, just a caravanner for the last 40 years. Secondly when on my Bailey Factory visit I was able to view the 2013 Unicorn Madrid. Very different from the outside as it has a large front moulding covering the whole front not just the corner bumpers, gas in the middle of the van and a different outside shell, and large vertical front window. Can't comment on the inside as I do not have a Unicorn. if you are thinking of buying new make sure you visit a dealer that has a 2013 model on display, it is very different from the pre 2013 models.

My advise is don't buy one.
My Valencia has damp lockers and although its back from being repaired one locker is still leaking.
I have also had over 40 problems with the caravan.
In short its the worst performing caravan we have ever had.

If you like elddis, then buy a new 2013 model, all these versions are now glued together, use very few screws now, and have a 10 year warranty.

All the alutech models have reported leaks, granted i have no idea what numbers are affected, but the signs aren't good.

Henry,

Thanks for your comments. I am much calmed! I am sure that our brand new, second hand Bailey will be fine and as others have pointed out, bad news spreads like wildfire while the good stuff never seems to get out. Thanks for your time mate, much appreciated

Dustydog,
Thanks mate. I loved my Elddis and not a thing to complain about I have to say. However, it was eyed by the professional thieves of the traveller community and rather than work all your life to achieve the purchase they have other methods! As I approach 60 I am thinking do I want to be towing such a lump around at my age? Probably not and going to the Valencia, although not what I would have chosen initially will allow us to continue caravanning, have a move rand all the rest of the advantages of a single axle. I see so many baileys when I am out and about and my travels take me from North to South, East to West. I am in Leicestershire but I am sorted with a good supplier who seems the ticket but if you have any info re dealers let me know. Bit worried about what Ray says and he is speaking from experience so I have to take what he says on board. With a 10 yr ingress warranty I guess that says it all. What a shame some people have the bad luck which I know all about!!! Thanks again

Thanks Ray,
I have had the van thoroughly checked out and there doesn't seem to be a problem. It could be that you have a rougue van and thats very unfortunate. I am sure that many people dont have an issue as we didnt with our beloved Elddis. I have spoken to a dealer who I trust completely with his honesty and he assures me that a bad bailey is a very rare beast indeed but as with other things in life, you get the odd bad one. i hope your problems can get sorted and you get some peace of mind back.

If the caravan is dry, then it should stay that way for a long time.
But do make sure the plastic trays are lifted, and do your own damp check.
Its not possible to detect the damp with the trays in place.
also be aware that the early caravans are nose heavy, i usually tow around 90-95kg with most of the load behind or on the axle (under the bed).
Also because of the very upright front the caravan can be a pig to tow.

PS my caravan lockers have had an attempt to repair the water leaks via the dealer, unfortunately they still leak, so now the dealer is asking Bailey to repair at the factory.

Thanks again Ray. hadnt thought about the more upright aspect on the front of the Bailey - Interesting! The bailey I am hoping to buy is a 2011 (feb) Unicorn Valencia. Bailey do seem to be help their customers if they have a problem. Where are you? If you are anywhere near Panelworks in Bawtry, they are excellent. I would rather go to them than anywhere.

My Valencia is also Feb 2011.
I bought of the dealer at chesterfield, i would have bought from panel works, but i had two unsatisfactory services there, with my last caravan.

Hi Ray,
That does really suprise me. I have only dealt with them recently and found them excellent. Just shows you how different people get a different angle on others. Why were the services unsatisfactory? Are you talking about Panelworks or Yorkshire Caravans who work from the same premises?

When i was a contractor customers would always say " a contractor is only as good as the men they send on site ".
I think that's true of dealers, turn over of employees can be quite high, due probably to the pay?

1st service warranty work wasn't done on collect, after having it week, and the chap dealing with us wasn't very good, we had to wait for the repairs, time waster.
2nd service dealer (Bawtry caravans) had caravan for a week, went to collect caravan, (going away two days later), "sorry sir forgot to do service".
So waited for two hours for service to be done, very frustrating, actually stopped us buying our Valencia from them.
Of cause that could be completely changed today, for better or worse.

I bought our Valencia in March 2012 from a dealer in south Yorkshire , a pr-owned 2011 model and we are very pleased with this, our first caravan. We have been out in it several times over this summer and have had no problems at all with the van. Everything on and in the van has worked on each outing with no problems. I acknowledge others may have had problems with vans in the unicorn range, but that fortunately , has not happened to me and for our first caravan, it has been a positive experience

So your wardrobe doors aren't warped then?
Every one I've seen have been.
Only one problem on my week away last time out, fridge decor panel popped out at the top.
Had same thing with my last Senator, it seems nothing changes.

Hi Ray
I have been to my van this morning and found that the wardrobe doors are ok but as it wil be stored outdoors there is time yet over the winter, at which point I will be knocking on the dealers door as it still has their warranty, to get them replaced, if they are warped

So Bailey can provide a door that doesn't warp!
Only last week at Lowden caravans we looked at a Valencia on sale, LHS door warped RHS looked ok.
I am having a warped shower room corner cupboard door replaced when i take the caravan in for return to Bailey for my damp lockers.
Also the cupboard to the RHS of the fridge, that's swollen on the top, looks like its got wet, but i can't think how as the door is recessed under the worktop.

Thanks Ray for your info, hope you get the issues you highlighted resolved. It certainly opens your eyes to look beyond the blurb the manufacturers put out about the build quality of their vans. Having forums where we can share info with others about the same models has been a valuable resource for me, as a newbie to caravanning. I do think that other manufacturers have similar problems also across their range of products.

Had my Bailey Unicorn Valencia for 2 years, from day one nothing but trouble, the splash panel at the back of the worktop incorporating the sink was detached had it back 3 times before a permanent repair, next wiring problem with the Alde heating system, turned out to be a problem with the wiring in general which resulted in the Alde sysytem blowing a fuse when the TV aerial was plugged into the TV, (apparently quite a few Valencias had this problem). Wardrobe doors bowed, which were eventually replaced, Blinds to 5 windows replaced, leaking towel rail from new, bathroom cupboard twisted, trim around light in bathroom not fitting correctly, trims to other cupboards cut short, rail supporting concertina door detached from the roof, rusting hinges on doors, kitchen drawer not opening and closing correctly because it had been badly fitted, panel at side of the door entance became detached (because it is only held together with small staples), shower basin had a drilled hole in the side which had been there from new. As we never used the shower unit (I know dirty so and so!) we only became aware of this some 18 months down the line when our friends who had a Unicorn pointed it out to me, I thought it was an overflow for the shower unit.
All in all the caravan was back and forth to the dealers for almost 20 months until we eventually got everything sorted out, or at least I thought so.
I've just had the caravan in for it's 24 month service and the dealer has contacted me and told me that they have discovered a damp problem at the front of the caravan, apparently it's to do with the front side locker doors and Bailey are only too well aware of this and they have produced a modification package which the dealer can then apply. The only trouble is that the modification which Bailey are suggesting and supplying is apparently not solving the problem. The dealers themselves have been looking into this problem and feel they may have sussed out the problem and hopefully a cure.
The two front side locker doors have drain holes on the edge opposite the hinges but these doors were apparently meant to hinge from the top and the drain holes would be at the bottom thus allowing any water to drain away. What they have suggested is the holes to the side are filled to prevent water ingress and new holes drilled to the bottom of the door to allow water disbursement.
Does it work? well I'll find out when I pick it up and use it for a few weeks because it still has to go back to the dealer to have the modification applied, apparently it takes about 6 weeks for the modification package to reach the dealer.

P.S. I do like the Valencia though although at 85kg noseweight from the factory is tad heavy I feel!

Hello Rimp,

The exworks nose weight has very little relevance, as it will change depending on how you load the caravan. The driver is expected to load the caravan to achieve the correct noseweight for their outfit.

My Valencia is now back at Baileys being repaired due to the front lockers all three leaking.
Its not usually the side doors thats the problem, i'm pretty sure mine isn't leaking there.
My leaks emanate from the floor bolts, you can locate them by the plastic oval nut holders.
Some can leak through the front led grab handles, water drips down inside the lockers from the led wires.
Hopefully bailey can repair the leaks, as my dealer failed.

I agree a exworks weight of 88kg is heavy and causes problems loading, i have very little in front of the axle to get the nose weight down to 90/95kg.
The new unicorn 2 has resolved that problem by using a side gas locker, removed the front over head lockers, and pared down the front chest, the onboard tank has also gone.

"The word vintage, used to describe dresses and clothing, is a broad term that is generally used to refer to clothing that originates from a past era. In general, clothing that dates earlier than the 1920s, is considered to be antique. Whereas clothing and dresses that have emerged after the 1920s, up to the 1980s and 90s, is considered to be vintage. Retro, or vintage style, usually refers to clothing that is an imitation of the style of a previous era.
A range of vintage style clothing that is hugely popular today, are the fifties dresses. The enduring popularity of these dresses, might be because that was the time women's clothing made significant strides, as it was after the second World War and many restrictions had been lifted and designers had more freedom and materials available to create beautiful women's fashion ranges.
Some of the popular dress styles that have enjoyed a timeless appeal have included the Ophelia dress, floral tea dresses, Audrey Hepburn style dresses, the figure hugging Lindy Bop dresses and dresses made famous by Grace Kelly and many classic Hollywood stars. Even today, young women are choosing vintage style dresses for their special occasions such as a ball, prom night, and other formal parties, because they have a definite charm and elegance and have been designed to enhance a woman's shape and beauty."

"One of the most popular, but simple fifties dresses, is the petticoat. This was designed to be flattering to a lady's shape and also, to enhance the dress she was wearing over it. Petticoats made of silk and woollen materials were initially introduced for women to wear under the main dress, as they provided warmth and would enhance women's busts. The classic petticoat then became shorter and lacy petticoats became the fashion, as they delicately accentuated the dresses that were worn over them, such as the Ophelia dress.
Vintage style dresses UK are available in a wide variety of sizes from vintage clothing shops, textile fairs, auctions, flea markets, estate sales, antique markets, garage sales and collectable fairs. However, there is always the risk with buying genuine vintage clothing, that the sizes may not match current clothing sizes. But there are a number of special boutiques online, who specialise in designing and creating vintage clothing to order. They can take your specific measurements and produce an outfit that will be tailor made and fit you perfectly"
