Battery not charging when connected to car.

Bit of a head scratcher this one!

Today I have just finished sorting out the electrics on the car, so now I have a fully functioning 12S socket.

On testing, fridge works - well at least it draws current, did not seem to get too cold but then I am led to believe they are not all that brilliant on 12V anyway.

But putting a meter accross the battery showed no voltage rise, not even a 0.01 of a volt increase. Made sure all switches on the zig unit were in their corect positions but nada.

Putting the 12V supply selector from caravan battery to car battery, and I was able to power the caravan from the car, which seemed to prove that the supply was getting through.

All fuses on the zig unit were checked and seemed to be OK.

I even disconnected the caravan battery and put a meter accross the leads, not a single volt. In all other respects it seems to be OK - charges off the mains via the zig unit no problem, powers caravan fine.

Any suggestions - before I just wire the battery direct to the 12S plug!

Hi, Can you confirm the age of the van? Pre 97, or therabouts, the charging voltage is on pin 2 with the negative on pin 3. On later vans it is on pin 4 with the negative on pin 3. [the supply on pin 4 is charging the battery whilst the car engine is running and can supply the vans internal 12v when it is not, or when the car is disconnected from the van of course.

Both Car and van are 1985 ish, 12S socket wired according to caravans original handbook. In any case the wiring on the sockets checks out and both the fridge and the zig unit are getting power as they should - it just seems that the zig unit is not supplying this power to charge the battery as it should!

Sorted!

Took the zig unit out and found a disconnected blue wire at the back, wrapped up in insulating tape. Interestingly it had a bullet connector on it. Traced it back to the Towing/On site switch. Took the bullet connector off and wired it back in to its proper place connected to the green wire and bingo! Battery now charges!

Why someone had disconnected it and put a bullet connector on it is anybodys guess!
