Which if they do vote for strike action could leave fuel supplies short .
What does get my goat is most of these guys are on premium rates anyway, and of course the anti lorry brigade will use this as an excuse to attack all lorry drivers.
Actually i would not mind the abuse if the rates these guys are on was the industry standard but its not...Greed and envy comes to mind, why is it every workforce thinks that if a company is profitable they deserve a bigger cut? would the same people be happy with huge pay cuts if the companies in question were not as profitable? cause not........

.

Tanker drivers can earn £40k plus per year. Made up of shift allowances, unsociable hours allowances and the "inherhant" danger of the job ans some very relevant skills that they need.

Seeing as you didn't answer my question, I've just googled.

Quote from bbc news site: 'Tanker drivers across the UK are to be balloted over industrial action as a protest over wages, pensions and working conditions, the Unite union has said'. Unquote

you mean they need the right class of ADR licience? Whats new! and its no more specialized or costlier or time consuming to get than having to have the right hi ab licience to use on construction sites!
in fact everything you have said can be used to generally cover what a vast majority of hgv drivers do or put up with but without the big super fat pay packet!
OK" inherent danger"! well thats a hard one to define do you mean that the vehicle could blow up? if so cannot recall hearing about one do that although have seen a few hgvs on fire, and none were petrol tankers..
I suppose we should be greatful afterall its only 2 or 3 years since they did the same thing.

Now that's what i consider an "inherently dangerous job"

Its no wonder this country is in the mess its in.40k a year for driving a lorry, thats £800 per week and no nights out,not bad money by anybodies standards.Maybe they should take a look at the coal industry and ship builders to see were the striking got them.I wonder if because the price of fuel has gone up these guys thing their wages should follow suit.

Johnny, you seem to be implying that i support the tanker drivers due to the dangererous nature of the job. Its a statement of fact. It is more dangerous, and the consequences of a tanker crashing carrying 20,000 litres of highly inflammable fuel are somewhat greater than a stobart truck carrying empty carlsberg cans.

(I come across very few tanker drivers tailgating on the motorway, but your general haulier cant wait to get to get up your rear end.)

Carry out your own risk assessment and the results may shock you.

However , the tanker drivers earn far in excess of what i believe to be acceptable. There are far more dangerous jobs - jobs that carry high levels of risk to the individual, but less risk to the public.

What percentage of HGV drivers earn £40,000 and what percentage drive tankers with an inflammable or dangerous cargo? What is the average pay of an ordinary HGV driver? Aren't HGV drivers restricted to the number of hours driven in a day and in a week.

Yes they are, but thats like you say driving, add to that waiting time or doing other work, and it can get complicated as to just how many hours a week you can do.

for instance, you must have 11 hours break from driving, twice a week this can be brought down to just 9 hours break, and then you have a weekly rest, now this gets complicated too or maybe its just me getting old! triued to copy and paste the info as its so long winded, but had problems.. sorry

if we cut the tanker drivers' wages in half how much do we save per litre at the pumps? because politics aside all i actually care about is what it costs me.
