Unless I am very much mistaken, the site is in York, which is about 98 miles from Ambleside in the Lake District.

Look to Cumbria if you want the Lake District, this ones on the outskirts of York. No beaches but plenty of excellent things to see / do eg National Railway Museum, York Minster, River , North Yorkshire Moors and more.
If you're worried about pitch size have a look at Google Earth. IMO they are plenty big enough, even for your Marquee.
You could do a two centre and also stay somewhere near Whitby say?

Beechwood Grange is my favorite site for York, never had a problem with pitch size and I have a 26ft t/a.Bit of a travel to the Lake district but ideal for York and Yorkshir Moors.

Hi

Beechwood Grange is a good site, just north of York and easy to get to from the main A64. Tip - try to avoid arriving at rush hour on a Friday as the A64 can get busy - although its dual carriageway. Lots in York to do - eg railway museam, York minster, Yorvig museam, river - boat trips available, you can walk around the walls, York for shopping has some small shops in The Shambles area. Betty's tea shop for afternoon tea or morning coffee is nice and quaint Advise using park and ride to get into York - short drive from site - York is very expensive to park. From Beechwood Grange you can also get to North Yorkshire Moors, Whitby and Scarborough setting for filming Heartbeat. There are some nice National Trust properties in the area - good for walking and picnics. There are also some nice pubs for lunch throughout the area. Leeds, Bradford, Harrogate are also easy driving from site. Beechwood Grange was a regular weekend haunt for us prior to relocation. We also shopped and worked around York, previous home was only 40 minutes towing from York. Pitches are well spead out and have seen very large motorhomes on some pitches. Having read this OH has suggested we think about returning - to visit old haunts - would be approx 6 hours towing for us now.
Hope this helps

Hi Jo

We think Beechwood Grange is more spaced out than Rowntree cc, there appears to be more space between pitches. Rowntree is good as its walking distance from the centre of York, however , we have always prefered Beechwood Grange as we feel it has more space and more convenient if you want to explore outside of York.

I have to agree with all posts. I went there lasy year for the first time and was pleased about the pitch sizes and a nice suprise was the Fish and Chip van whose product was very nice indeed. You dont need to take the car into town either with the Park and Ride at Monks cross and Clifton moor. It is a lot cheaper using them than trying to find a place to park for the day in the city.
Ofcourse with being next to the A64 I expected road noise but was pleasently suprised at how quiet it is. It is a good run to the coast but you dont need a map to get there once you are on the A64.
You can go to Beverly and Hull just as easy, there is Leeds and Northallerton, place are endless down at York. It is only about 77 miles for us from Durham and we just go down the A1m and onto the A59 and that takes us about 1 3/4 hour. So I guess you might come over the A66 and join the A1m at Scotch corner and head south which will take you about hour and 1/4. Be aware there is speed restrictions on the A1m down to 50 mph because of the upgrade to three lanes but its not to bad.
Hope you enjoy your stay when you get there.

jo-anne,
I can confirm everything that has been said about B'Wood Grange. We stayed there for 10 nights at the beginning of August and although busy you did't feel hemmed in. As someone else said the pitches are big and there were some very large motor homes on site when we were there. There is a good childrens play area and a large field for ball games and a separate large fied for dogs. The only restriction is that the access road is shared with a stud farm and dogs must be transported in the car on this road and not walked or carried, however there were many dogs on site while we were there and this did not not seem to be a problem. On the question of what to do the list is endless, there are so many different places to go, only problem is some of them can be a little bit expensive. If you google york tourist board it is very helpful. As a previous post mentioned the fish and chip van calls 3 or 4 times a week and is very popular, however if you go out of the site and turn left along the A64 for approx. 2 miles there is a large fish & chip resturant and take away on the l/h side which is excellent (my mouth is watering just thinking about it)

HI! JO -anne Agree with all reply,s BUT there,s always a but it is that if you have a dog you are NOT allowed to walk them along the access road from the site to the road they MUST be in a vehicle the site is next to a horse stud so you can only wlk them in the dog walk (about the size of o small football pitch ) very good site otherwise there is also a Camping and caravaning site about 2/3 miles away have a look at Sherrif hutton on there web site it is just as good as any in the area
cheers Duggie
