Ann, there is no "best" towcar, cos everyone has different tastes. Personally, I use a 4.2 litre petrol/lpg Range Rover as my towcar/everyday runabout, and wouldn't change it.( Now wait for flak from the "greens"!)

Hi Emmerson

I mentioned "favourite" tow car as I thought perhaps "best" would be inappropriate.

Mine is a Volvo V70 D5 AWD - fantastic!

Dont worry Emmerson they'll moan more about my R Class, can't wait to be able to drive it and get a caravan in tow.

My wife loves it and it's getting a Kompressor upgrade before I get to drive it. 450+ Hp and awesome 585 torque.

Hi Ann,

I am not sure what my favourite tow car would be. Things to be taken into consideration would be the type of caravan one tows and the type of sites one uses.

I have chosen a modestly sized caravan of around twenty feet overall length / 1150 Kg MTPLM, and I mostly use well surfaced sites, although I occasionally enjoy stays on quiet CLs.

In order to heave me around to and from these places I use a VW Golf SE TDI130 estate, which has always been more than equal to the task. I have owned the vehicle for almost four years and 43,000 miles during which time it has had no breakdowns whatsoever (the only failure being to a dust cover on the rear hatch mechanism.) It has averaged 54mpg solo, and achieves between 30 and 37mpg towing.

I have been very happy with this vehicle, and will not hesitate to 'go for' something of a similar 'ilk' when it is replaced. Of course others will have their own favourites since personal choice is still permitted here - and long may it continue to be!!

Enjoy your hols.

There's a big difference between the best towcar and one's favourite towcar. A favourite is relatively easy to name because it doesn't necessarily have to be a rational choice. But how does one define the best? For a start it depends a lot on what proportion of one's mileage is done towing or whether it's the only car in the family.

The best towcar could be one that is capable of coping with all conceivable conditions and consequently exceeding one's requirements when conditions are not so demanding or it could be just a good balance between economy in everyday use and tugging capability when towing. Difficult to answer, that one. It's a personal choice that everyone has to make for themselves.
