Blood tests for dogs

Does anyone have any idea of the cost of a blood test for a dog regarding rabies? The daughter who is travelling directly from South Africa to the UK has been quoted £300 for two dogs and the blood tests have to be sent to Germany from South Africa. Not sure why they have to be sent to Germany when they are nto going anywhere near the EU on the trip? Surely to enter the UK would be the same as if any of us are travelling to the EU with our pets and then returning again. Blood test for rabies to enter EU and the AHC required for return to UK. IMHO £150 per dog for blood test is expensive as when we had one done recently it set us back £80. She is not aware of the AHC.

Is it because we are a third country now and our laboratories haven’t been authorised to conduct rabies blood tests for animals entering the EU the bloods are analysed in Europe. But it dies seem odd that they should go to Germany when the dogs are going SA to UK.

That is what we are trying to work out. Also South Africa has Onderstepoort a world recognised university in rabies. The veterinary faculty has strong ties with the Royal College of Veterinary Science in the UK. Weird? I am thinking someone is trying to get them to part with as much money as possible before they leave. They still have the AHC which will probably need to be filled out and paid for as another cost of £240. In their currency this equates to nearly R12000.

The arrangements between UK and EU are a specific negotiated agreement following Brexit and not relevant to any agreements between UK and rest of the world.

The UK Foreign Office or the UK embassy in South Africa should be able to advise of requirements for entry.

Not sure why you mention EU as it is of no concern to the EU if they are travelling direct to the UK and not entering the EU at any point.

In your original post you stated "Surely to enter the UK would be the same as if any of us are travelling to the EU with our pets and then returning again" - I'm trying to highlight that it's not the same.

Thanks I have since found out that the facility Onderstepoort Veterinary Institute in South Africa has strong ties with the Royal College of Veterinary Science in the UK and is also an EU approved place for blood tests so no need for the blood tests to be done in Germany. Seems like some one is trying to get them to part with as much money as possible.

The U.K. has been rabies free for along time👏👏.
The web says you can have the tests done in the U.K. A very quick read tells me , as usual , no one has had the brains to update the records. We are NOT in the EU NOR governed by their rules. Well no one has said so yet😜.

Remember that all EU legislation was enacted into UK legislation before we left and while we're now free to do so, it'll require new UK legislation to remove any old EU laws.

No need for quarantine any more if all jabs have been done including the tithe test. To enter the UK after all the jabs etc only the Animal Health Certificate is required which is different to the AHC. That is done by the Pet Transport company.

As of 2018 there were only two EU “approved“ laboratories in U.K. certified to analyse rabies blood tests. That’s the latest information on UKGOV websites. They have to still be EU approved in order for British animals to be tested prior to gaining the documentation required to travel to Europe. Of course those labs are also approved under the UK’s own accreditation service for carrying out a wide range of other diagnostic services. In the same way some overseas laboratories are approved by UK.
