Am meeting with my son at Hoburn Blue Anchor on Sunday morning to pick up my car and caravan from him and take it on to the CCC site at Veryan. Am uncertain as to best route to initially take between the A358 and pick up M5 at Taunton, B3190 / A396 / A361 to pick up M5 at J27, or A396 / A361 to pick up M5 at J27.

Any recommendations from those familiar with those roads.

Hi

I live in Minehead and I would not recommend using the B3190/A396 routes. All have narrow places and lots of bends and the A396 has a very nasty junction at Black Cat. oh and dont forget the pheasents that are allways on the road!!

The way I allways go is from Blue Anchor to Carhampton on B3191, Carhampton to Williton on A39, then Williton to Taunton on A358. When you get to cross keys roundabout left towards Taunton then right on next roundabout onto Silk Mills head towards A38 at end of Silk mills right on roundabout on A38 towards Wellington then at end of road left on roundabout to join M5 at Jct 26. Might be a longer route but much better roads for towing.

You could always just pick up the A39 at Carhampton and follow it all the way to Truro.

You woul have to tackle Porlock hill - but at least you would be going up!

It may be a slower route but it will be more interesting.

Thank you for the info & suggestions Robin & Rupert. The info on 3190 / 39 is very helpful and will probably follow Robin's suggestion as I went down & up Porlock Hill without the van last year and remember being grateful I was not towing at the time. My recollection is that CCC advise against using A39 between Minehead & Lynton when towing a caravan. Also used A39 between Blackmoor Gate and Lynton to get to CCC site last year and whilst not a problem I suspect that getting to the M5 will make for an easier journey albeit not as picturesque.

Hi Alun

westbound, Porlock Hill is 1 in 4, topping out at 1 in 8. There is a toll road that by-passes the worst of the hill, but is still a climb, with several tight hairpin bends. Then you have the descent down Countisbury Hill (1 in 4 again) into Lynmouth.

We would opt for Robin's route.

I drive most of these routes engaged in my work and one thing you dont see that often on the A39 past Minehead is caravans, that is because of the Porlock hill and Countisbury hill, Yes it is a much more interesting route but I would never use it for towing you also have to climb out of Lynton and the route they send caravans is also narrow. The toll road at Porlock is also expensive! The boring route is the less stressfull route by far and is allways the way i go when towing to Cornwall.
