Booking French sites in the summer

We're spending 5 weeks in France in July and August. The plan is to travel down the west coast deciding when and where to go at the time. Friends have suggested that this is not a good idea as we will have trouble getting on to sites without booking. Any advice would be extremely welcome!

Thanks

Helen, it depends what you want to do. I have been to the landes area near Biscarosse several times at end July beginning of August. I have never booked for overnights or short stays enroute from Cherbourg and have never had a problem with getting a pitch at either Municipals or or other sites. If I wanted a particular site at a particular time I would book especially if the main site for the holiday. As you are, I think, only a single unit I would take pot luck unless you have your heart set on a site. Ray

We have toured France in July/August for the past 15 years. We have children so have wanted sites with facilities for them, especially a pool. We tend to find the sites we have been on are full at that time of year, with just the odd night available. So as to not have to pack up each day and move on we have always booked our pitches in advance, usually by Jan. and even then we have had to take alternative sites.

One word of caution if you have a twin axle, many sites will not them 'on spec', even municipals.

If you want pools etc then I recommend booking - at least until about the 15 August, when most of the French head home. We too are doing the west coast this year and then returning from Spain, and we have booked all of our sites just in case. Worst scenario for us would be to arrive at a site in our desired area at about 1600 and get turned away.
