budgies.....

Well sorry about this one, Does anyone caravan with a budgie? We have a budgie,who is 10 months old we dont really want to leave him when we go away in the summer as dont want to rely on others having to come in and feed him.My hubby doesnt think he would travel well and the van would upset him..(the budgie that is).

Hi Carmen

my auntie used to take her wee budgie away with her but she took it away in the winter and i think the change in tempeture,s had an adverse affect on it, because when they got home after a week it popped its clogs, this could have been coinsidence but my auntie said it was overly quiet when they were away.

Over the years of caravanning we have done we have seen lots of cage birds away on holiday in caravans, even saw two girls in a converted ambulance on Keswick C&CC site with a white duck it followed them everywhere.

it all depends on how long you are going away for.... you may be able to fill food trays and leave plenty water, or you can get shop where you got it from to take it in as lodger.

thanks rab. thats what i was afraid of, the kids would never forgive me. i will try and get some kind soul to take him in for a fortnight.

Hi,

We have never taken our cat, but have seen lots of people with various pets - caged birds, rats, rabbits etc. They seem to enjoy the break and if you have room for them, then why not.

I remember one site on Hayling Island helping someone trying to catch 3 escaped rabbits! So what ever you do, make sure the pet is secure! We did catch the rabbits and all was well.

If you take the bird get a show box and carry the bird in the car not the van.

You have to keep the birds stress level down.

thank you all for your replies. we will reconsider, it may be kinder to leave him at home with a neighbour coming in to look after him if anything happened to him the kids would never forgive me and i couldnt stand the hubby saying ..told you so. We do leave him for a few days but have never left him for 2 weeks at a time.

damian, why was my reply removed? Carmen did not throw her arms up in the air and start wailing like Soozeeg did, ( i hate the way some bleeding hearts always feel the need to be offended on behalf of someone else). as an animal lover myself i would never harm anything. it was a joke told in the same vein as the old Dave Allen anology about the wee lad asking what would happen when his tortoise died, and he replied, " well we will invite all your pals around, make him a wee box, bury him in the garden, have some ice cream and jelly, maybe a game of musical chairs, etc" to which the wee lad replied "can we kill it now then dad?" i and others thought that was quite funny, but obviously you have had a sense of humour bypass.
