butane to propane problem

I have just changed to propane for the winter holiday, just in case things turn really cold. I have a 2004 caravan with fitted regulator. After a trial over the weekend the gas pressure became reduced on night 2 leading to an early morning attempt to change back over to the butane. All was Ok for an hour but I was left with poor pressure once again. I have been told this is due to oil getting in the regulator ??? now need to be chaged at my cost despite taking prior advice from the dealer on using propane. Has any one had similar?

Ian, the problem you have is nothing to do with the change from Butane to Propane.as such.

With current temperatures it is very doubtful that Butane would have been any good as it stops gassing at about 4 degrees and with windchill and the cylinder being in a closed locker with massive ventilation, it is more than likely to have dropped that low despite maybe a 7 degree outside temp.

I think you already had the problem happening and the change just happened to be coincidental.

Yes it will need a new regulator, but if it has not already been done, the new regulator needs relocating as high as possible in the gas locker with a 90 degree elbow on the inlet soi that the pigtail forms a downward attitude to the cylinder.

Damian, Thanks for that. Understand the raising of the regulator but don't understand why this has happened now. Is it possibly a problem that has built up since new. I bought the van in april / may this year so I'm very new to the game should I pursue the issue under the extended warranty I have ??

Ian, it is a well known problem since the introduction of the fixed regulators since 2004, and as of yet, nobody can give a sound reason for it happening.
