Buying a caravan when it's not in the owners name...

Hello

I have found a caravan and placed a deposit on it while carrying out the necessary checks.

The CRIS check is all clear - no finance, damage, stolen etc etc.

The only problem I have is that the current owner hasn't registered it in their own name - it is still in the previous owners name. The caravan is located at their house and they have the receipt for when they bought it off the previous owners. I am going to ask to see their driving license to show that this is their address.

As long as that matches up should I be concerned? I am not sure what else I can do really...

Thanks

Rhys

We recently traded a caravan in for a new model (via a dealership). We were surprised to find we had a telephone call from CHRIS asking us to confirm we were no longer the owners of the part-ex. It might be worth having a direct word with CHRIS to make sure everything is in order before handing over any money. They can only answer your questions by 'Yes' or 'No' so make a list of what you need to know prior to the phone call. If unsure walk away.

Hi Ann

I carried out a CRIS check this morning and everything was in order - just the different name and address.

The other thing to mention is that the curent owners actually have the CRIS certificate as well.

Thanks

Rhys

It would appear that the current owner has not registered the caravan with CRIS. There is no legal requirement for them to do so. You say you have had it checked out o.k.with Cris therefore the previous owner cannot have reported it stolen.

To me you have checked out the main concerns i.e. it's not stolen, been damaged or got outstanding finance on it.

The receipt you mention from the previous owner, how long ago was it purchased and is there contact details for that owner so that you could check if the transaction took place.

Were CRIS able to confirm that the registered owner was the same as the person named in the receipt?

Yes CRIS confirmed the previous owner was the same name as on the receipt.

We had had our caravan about a year before we re registered it as ours, it could be that your sellers are like us and have just never got around to it.

Perhaps it was as simple as the current owners not wanting to pay the CRIS transfer fee and therefore left it in the other owners names? Now it is causing an issue for you.

Some years age I brought our current van from my brother. I was not to keen to pay CRIS the
