We are due to pick up our 2003 Elddis Avante from the caravan dealer today.

Just a bit suprised as he said the caravan doesnt come with a spare wheel or leisure battery as the previous owners had removed these items. He did say that he could arrange to get these items for us. sound like a scam ????????

Hi Alan, nope, not necessarily a scam. Even some new caravans don't come with battery or spare wheel. Usually they are part of the bargaining process and could be thrown in for free.

Lol is correct, most brand new caravans don't come with battery or spare wheel so when the people who have bought the van from the dealer come to trade it in they tend to keep the battery and the spare wheel that they have bought as extras.

Because, going full circle here, the new van doesn't have them as standard.

It also gives the salesman the chance to point you in the direction of the accessory shop.

Agree with the comments, but one does assume that the previous owner has checked that the old spare wheel will fit his new caravan??? I am slightly more suprised regarding the leisure battery. Now I accept that if a motor mover has been fitted then a larger battery may have been installed and the previous owner would wish to take both with him. But again one assumes his/her new van would come with a battery so does he/she wish 2?

I think I would accept the loss of a spare wheel but bug the dealer for at least a basic leisure battery, especially if one was supplied by the manufacturer in the original specification.

Hi Alan

like you i bought an eldis avante 534 2003 model from a dealer as a used van it too did not have a spare wheel, battery, mains hook up lead, step etc however as part of the sale the dealer included all of these items in the sale.

i also think that people remove them to sell them my local freebie paper has lots of items like this week after week.

regards

I would expect to receive any van with the equipment listed by the manufacturer as standard, not optional, equipment when the van was new. To my mind this would probably exclude spare wheels, and I do not know of any manufacturer that offers cables, steps etc so I would expect to have to supply these myself. But at the end of the day one needs to look at the deal being offered and does it give enough financial leeway to allow for the purchase of certain items separately. If so, then it can still be a good deal.

We've never yet bought a new van that had a battery supplied as standard. However, they've always had the mains lead and a step. We've always had Baileys so are they the only company that includes these items as standard? Surely not!

Whether or not it was because it was Bank Holiday Monday and the end of the month I don't know but my local dealer did us a great deal on our 2005 Sterling Europa 540 last week.

We got battery, step, water pump, wastemaster, aquaroll, power lead, toilet chemicals, a brand new awning and
