We are planning a short stay in Belgium mid August and wondered if anyone had stayed at this site or can recommend any in the area that don't insist on Saturday - Saturday bookings during August.

Thanks

Nick

Hi Nicholas,

I drive past Brugge almost every week on my way to work in Rotterdam.

We had a look at the coastal sites a few years ago - from the French border to Zeebrugge - and they are all exactly what you would expect - aimed at the young family market - facilities are a bit variable, pitches a bit small, etc.

Camping Memling is an all year site and quite good - the facilities are roughly between C&CC and CC standards.

Camping Klein Stand has the attraction of a water park in the camping grounds - so it's certainly aimed at the young family market.

Brugge - drive to the massive underground car park on the southern edge of the town (near the railway bridge) and walk into town. Food is quite good - nothing wrong with quality or presentation but I've marked it down for the higher prices charged for eating on the city square - but you should do this anyway.

A more authentic experience - try the small town of Damme about 10 km North East of Brugge - very popular with the locals - great restaurants and really good beer.

Anything else? This region speaks Vlaams - as I'm sure you know as you mentioned Brugge not Bruges - so if you don't already you may want to learn a few Dutch words like "Dank U" (Thank you), "Austublieft" (Please) and of course "biertje" - the first one is easy but you'll need the second to attract a waiter for a beer - try one of the learning Dutch language web-sites for spoken examples.

Regards, Robert

Hi,

I agree with Rob_jax If you get the chance you should visit Damme. A beautiful little town with good food etc we have spent many a happy hour there just watching the world go by. Our favourite restaurant is just down from the bridge the first on the left (don't know the name), they served the most delicous mussels I have ever had.

We stayed at a little campsite a few KM from Damme, its attached to a bar/ restaurant on the canal and we would just cycle to Damme along the tow path. We are racking our brains trying to think of it's name. We will be going there again in September, we haven't been for a few years but will be hoping it is just as nice.

Have a good one

Julie

Thanks Julie and Rob_Jax. We'll certainly make sure to visit to Damme while we're there.

Trouble with trying Dutch is that I get it mixed up with German (which i speak fluently) so in the main find it safer to stick with English, although i undertsand some Flemish and have been known to come out with the occasionally Dank U Wahl.... Gives you a sore throat if you try and speak to much though.... the chhh sound doesn't come naturally.
