We'll be spending a week or so in Essex before coming to the meet at Lickhill Manor. Does anyone know of any campsites in the Braintree/Chelmsford/Witham/Maldon area that are open before Easter? We don't need anything fancy. An electric hook-up is all we require.

Lutz, There is Colchester Camping, been there once wouln't recomend it. There is a Caravan Club CL site about a mile away from us at Great Saling, which is about 6 miles from Braintree, just of the A120. The site is open all year with electric hook up. Page 324 of the CC handbook.

Thanks for the recommendation but we'll only be visiting the UK for a couple of weeks and so it hardly seems worthwhile becoming a member of the Caravan Club just for the odd occasion that we may use one of their CL sites.

In the case of Camping and Caravanning Club sites, however, we would have access using our CCI card but the Caravan Club doesn't seem to recognise it for overseas visitors.

There seems to be a distinct shortage of decent caravan sites in that area. The only one we know of is Colchester Camping which is affiliated, so you would be able to use it without being memebers of the CC. Sadly, have to agree...pretty naff site!!

Thanks everybody. I may give the one at Kelvedon Hatch a try. I've heard a lot about the noise problem at Colchester so I'll definitely give that a miss. However, through the internet I found a couple in the Maldon area (Barrow Marsh Caravan Park, Mill Beach and Saltcote Hall, Heybridge) and MillHouse Caravan Park in Little Baddow. Anyone know anything about these?

Hello Lutz.

Just seen this thread, I live three miles from Colchester Camping and endorse all that has been said, I do not think you would like the sites near Maldon, many statics in the area, a bit out of the way and road noise, Kelvedon Hatch is probably the best for your requirements, it is easy to pop into London from there for a day out and also only a few miles from M25 J28. Unless you would rather be near the coast, presuming you are coming in through Harwich there is a site at Weeley near Clacton on Sea, look at http://www.homesteadcaravans.co.uk/homesteadlake.htm this is only a few miles from the main Harwich to London Route.
