my van is 7.3 mtrs, while re newing my car insurance i asked if there was a limit to the length of van i could tow.the limit on this policy is 5.8 mtr shipping length.pulling anything longer would invalidate my insurance if i were in an accident.

I am certainly no expert on these matters, but it is not something I have come across before, as car insurance does not actually cover the caravan in the case of a accident [unless somebody knows differently]You have caravan insurance to cover the caravan.

Hopefully somebody wiser than me will come forward

Most car insurance policies cover your caravan for third party risks only, that is to say if you damage something with your caravan whilst towing it then your insurance company will cover the cost of the repair to the third party but not for the repair to your caravan.

Never heard of a length limit for caravans, it was certainly never mentioned when I told my insurance company about towing. I wonder where the length limit comes from? Seems a bit arbitrary to me!

Bell insurance have a limit - I know because I only found out I wasn't covered when the paperwork came through (despite giving them the details including the length when asking for a quote).

I think its mainly started coming in at the lower end of the market, but there can be a few other rules to look for. Aviva only covered a trailer/caravan if it was owned by me (stopped me hiring a trailer when doing some building work).

I've moved to Adrian Flux, who seem very relaxed about towing and modifications generally.

We insure our car and caravan with the Caravan Club now but when we were with Zurich we had no problems except they would only cover the car for 62 days and as we come to Europe for 3 months at a time we changed to the CC as it covers for 6 months.

I've just switched to Aviva. Told them I have a tow bar fitted etc. No mention anywhere about length restrictions. The Wyoming id 7.89m so I guess Russell's Insurers wont want me. Who are they Russell?

Hi,

Provided you have the CORRECT driving licence, your insurers will find it very difficult to wriggle out of paying a Third Party claim ..... even if you are blind drunk, overloaded, and driving flat out without brakes, on bald tyres, through a pedestrian only area. They can of course, come back and sue you to recover their losses.

They are likely to be unsympathetic when it comes to paying out for "own damage" ...... but I suppose you could always sue them.

I think you will find that 7 metres is the longest trailer that the normal car can tow, so you would be breaking the law if you pulled something longer. OKAY, there are exceptions, such as glider and boat trailers, but they seem to be dependent on the size of the load being carried ...... something like "indivisible".

I think something has got lost in the translations here.

Elddis, Swift, Bailey , Lunar , all make caravans longer than 7 metres, all pulled by normal cars. Ok I use a Sorento but I have seen non 4x4s tugging these c'vans.

I cannot ever remember being asked what I wil tow or the length of the unit by an insurer.

Best policy is to err on the side of safety and tell your insurer you are towing a caravan.

Hi Dustydog,

Checkout http://www.practicalcaravan.com/legal/index.html

Says max length is 7 metres. Note that the drawbar is not included in that length. I have also read mutterings about the gas-bottle box being included.
