Hi Folks

Just spoke to a friend of mine who has his Kia Sedona for sale online with autotrader.co.uk. He has been approached by a very well known car dealership called Evans Halshaw (who was called the Reg Verdy group) offering to buy his car unseen and payment would be made by telegraphic transfer into his bank account, before the car has been picked up and the log book has been signed (so in effect he is willing to buy the car before it has been seen). Anyone had an offer like this, and what do you think.......thanks c&p

Presumably your friend first has to hand over his bank details. Sounds like a scam to me.

Why would a huge car chain be a scam?

I would check out that it is Evans Halshaw who are calling you

You are not talking about a guy ringing up and asking for details etc as long as you do your homework and are 100% sure that its them as traders do ring people who have cars for sale as used stock is very difficult to get hold of now.

I wouldnt hand over my bank details i would ask for a chq and make sure its 100% cleared before releasing the car, sounds like your car is cheap for them to buy with no haggling,as they want to make money

If it is a scam, can some one explain how your account will be attacked?

I must have my bank details in the hands of a lest 10 different organisations.

When i sold my Audi, it was done via bank transfer, i gave him my bank details to effect the transfer, was i at risk?

This happened to a friend of ours.

The fraudsters fill in a false standing order mandate with the bank details obtained.

The bank sets up the standing order and sends money (in our friends case

Sold an Audi recently to a dealer they flew a driver up from London to Manchester. They paid by bankers draft (which was faxed the day before) so I called the bank branch it was drawn on and they confirmed the dealer was genuine, and it was their draft. As good as cash!! At some point trust has to come into it, if it's not cash. Afterall you could be selling a stolen car/caravan !!!

a bankers draft or the like can be recinded up to a month in the future you will see the money in your acc as the bank has in effect given a loan. when the bank finds that the cash from the sender is not forth coming they take their money back.

the safest way is a bank to bank transfer which Evans Halshaw should be able to do .OR go to the dealers premises & pick up the check & wait until it cleares before parting with the car this way you can be sure the buyer is at least legit

Sounds very fishy to me.

NOBODY buys a car without seeing it.

What model is it? year, Mileage, etc. Maybe they priced it way too low.

No a Bankers Draft that is genuine can not be recalled. That is the whole point of them. This is an urban myth.

Every car has a trade value and an expected condition and milage for it age.

If you look after your and its immaculate its still worth the same it just make it easier for the saleman to sell.

Dealer are always buying blind from auctions.

Like you said maybe its underpriced and he has a buyer lined up?
