Car Spare Wheel

My 2012 Mondeo has a space saver spare whjeel and, although the handbook does not say don't use it whilst towing, I would be a little bit wary of doing so. Consequently I have thought about buying another wheel from our local car breakers which would be far cheaper than buying a brand new wheel. The problem that I have, though, is that my wheels are 17" and the car breakers tell me that they very rarely get this size in. They have plenty of 16" but no 17". The suggestion that was made is that a 16" may actually be suitable, (as a temporary spare only), but what are the thoughts of others. Any advice / suggestions would be welcome to help me make up my mind. Thanks in advance.

Theoretically yes providing the 'spares' aspect ratio was increased to give the same circumference. However I'm not sure that legally it would be okay as your 'spare' would not be marked as such ie for emergency use. My space saver is 2 inch less on diameter than the full size tyre!
Why not buy a pattern alloy from somewhere and just fit it with a budget tyre. Alternatively eBay seems a ready source of used alloys or the Mondeo Owners Club? Have you tried Parts Gateway ? Happy hunting

My car a Vectra came with a space saver. It has 17"
alloys, I bought four 16" steel wheels and tyres for £30 off Ebay, kept
one, gave one away, sold the other two. While is not legal, I prefer it as it
has nearly the same rolling diameter as the 17" and will only be used as a
spare for a short as possible time allows to replace the damaged tyre (though
in six years it has not yet been used, touch wood!). The other issue is that the floor
(estate) is raised up about 3/4", a 17" alloy would be more, I have
another four 17" alloys for winter tyres (which I bough later) as well so I have tried it.

For my car, I ordered the option of a full size steel spare wheel with a tyre size of 195x65 15 the car tyres are 205x60 15. It is OK for towing, provided the correct tyre pressure is put in for towing or solo, however it is still classed as a temporary spare with a yellow rim and limited to 50mph.

As was suggested above I have just sourced a steel spare for my S Max (225/50x17 98w) from ebay but the problem now is that it takes up a significant amount of room in the boot. I should be able to use it as a replacement for my alloy though.

If you are patient you should be able to find a spare wheel on ebay as Mondeo wheels are frequently advertised (probably ok to use S Max or Galaxy wheels of the same size as well) although not the other way around because of the weight difference I am advised.

There was/is one here as in my post 2 in this thread
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Ford-Mondeo-17-Alloy-Wheel-/281066582015?pt=UK...
I removed the polystyrene round the Kuga spare wheel and cut 3in cavity wall polystyrene insulation to the same size
This then went under the original thus raising the boot floor just enough to clear the full size tyre

If your car is on the size of wheel fitted to the base model and has a skinny spare you will probably find that a full size spare would fit in the same space, perhaps with a small loss os space due to being wider.

It reduced my boot height by 3 in but fitted inside the original polystyrene as outlined previously

I hate to be a party pooper, but you're giving your insurance companies an awful lot of wriggle room if your involved in an accident with mixed tyre sizes on an axle - and trust me they don't even need a reason to wriggle, they do anyway!

Good point

This could happen if you are using a space saver. As long as you notify the insurance company, there should be no problem.

I doubt it as the Space Saver comes with the car and has the makers design authority behind it. Only if the maker has advised against towing with it would they wriggle. I know its bizarre as my Space saver is 2 inch less on diameter than the standard wheel and yes it is the correct one for the car as anything larger will not fit the well under the boot floor.

If you upgrade your spare from the standard, it is a modification and best to advise the insurance company. Probably have no effect on the annual premium but rather safe than sorry.
