Noticed in the latest cc mag, they are monitoring the increasing width of awnings, saying,as I read it,that if say you had a super wide or bowed out awning and say a new 8ft caravan then there wouldn't be sufficient gap between outfits and you would be asked not to pitch awning? That's how I read it,what do you think?
P.s doesn't affect me as mines a normal/narrow van and an old 2.25m awning, and on some cc sites I've been on I've only just squeezed on.

About 3-4 years ago CC tightened up on clearances and cancelled my awning pitch at Hawes which we had booked for our two week summer holiday. I could only have the pitch if no awning. So we booked a nearby commercial site in Hawes. Our van was a 2005 Bailey S5 Pageant with a standard Isabella Magnum. It’s just that the pitches were too close and they had started to enforce the spacing regulations more rigorously.

How ridiculous, they know the width of caravans and with a normal awning projection, what do they expect? perhaps Ill get an inflatable telephone box.

I thought it was aimed more at the increasingly popular trend for 'active' caravans (such as the swift base camp etc.) and the awnings that attach at the rear and protrude out......

I think it was initially aimed at base camp style vans, but most camc sites have good room behind pitch,so assume it's also referred to normal awning styles.Personally,I prefer to park van, awning, car, that way if no room I park car across front of pitch. This isn't allowed on camc sites as by the time you've parked car so just enough room to get out without putting your feet in mud/wet grass, then left enough room to open passengers door without clattering aqua roll, then put a normal awning up you're nearly on grass at other side.Dont get me wrong most sites have ample room but some are tiny.

It makes you laugh when I've just booked for France for next year and the standard smallest pitch is 13o square metres !!
Puts ours to shame !!
Somethimes in england I can just squeeze the car on the edge of the pitch with the awning up and maybe with a tyre partly on the grass !!

I suppose most sites worked out their spacing using the standard widest width at the time probably about 7' 6". The additional width might now be a problem on some sites with a maximum width caravan and this might be a point worth considering when buying one. Not all commercial sites are as strict on spacing but if you accept less you are accepting a less safe pitch.
In the fire on site at Broadway the CAMC spacing proved just enough to prevent the spread but the adjacent motorhomes were badly damaged.
I cannot see a lot of problem with the Basecamp type units provided they stop with enough room behind the to put up the awning on the pitch, but I did see details of one caravan which can now have an awning which goes down the side and round the back which might cause length issues.
If you book a larger pitch on the continent you do have to pay more as you would here.

Isn't the 6m guideline imposed by the CC referring to between units i.e. caravans only excluding awnings? BTW it is only a guideline for touring caravans as the legislation refers to distance between statics. Apparently the local council can change the rule for touring caravans from 6m to 5m or even 4m if they wish.
However as mentioned above in France we can site the caravan anyway we wish, have the awning out and add the sun shade to the awning which then extends a lot further than 3m from the caravan and we are not imposing on any one.

The CC has no authority to "impose" anything except on sites they own and operate, they may use it as a criteria when assessing sites for inclusion in their directories.

I think most people woudl realise I was referring to CC sites and not other commercial sites however it is your choice whether to be pedantic or not. :)
