Had a phone call from the owner of the storage compound where our caravan is stored today to inform me that our caravans fridge vents had been taken off and thrown on the ground under the caravan.

I dashed down to the site to discover that not only had they taken off the fridge vents, but smashed the caravan door lock but could not gain entry,so they have forced one of the windows open breaking 2 of the plastic stays and opened the blind to look in.

Thats it....nothing stolen.

I can only imagine that they were looking for a certain model of fridge and could not see it after removing the vents so tried to get a better look inside the van.

Another 6 vans had also been targeted and one unlucky owner actually had his fridge stolen.

Even after suffering the small amount of damage i count myself to be very lucky indeed as i was one of those caravanners who thought that it would never happen to me and used to leave all my caravan goodies inside....microwave.tv.towing mirrors.awning.hook up lead.etc...

Yes...this experience has taught me a lesson and its now completly empty.

Has anyone else here heard of the fridges being targeted?

Sorry to hear what's happened to you and other people.

Maybe this was carried out by someone who was extremely hungry.

Just a thought, but are certain fridges easier to remove from caravans than others?

I mean are some fitted so securely that maybe worktops or other things have to be removed first?

Im just dreading another call informing me that my caravan has been broken into again and the fridge removed.

Hopefully, mine wasnt the particular model they wanted or couldnt remove easily,or......they were disturbed and another visit from them is imminent.

I also store my caravan at a compound in the Bristol area and 18 units (both motorhomes and caravans) were broken into at the end of May. As far as I know, no one had a fridge taken, just Televisions and transistors, including my TV. Thieves broke window stays to get into my van and left absolute chaos inside, all lockers and cupboards searched and muddy footprints everywhere. Because of fingerprints the culprits have now been identified. I claimed on my insurance for cost of TV and fitting of new window stays and was surprised to discover that the TV is insured under contents and the window stays are insured under caravan, therefore two lots of excess needed to be deducted!

Several 'vans were broken into at a storage site we used, but no longer, nothing taken from any bar one. That one had the fridge, cooker, kitchen sink, water heater, space heater and the bathroom basin taken. Piping and wiring cut and items virtually hacked out of surrounds. Maybe someone converting a commercial van to a mobile home.

Thank you for your replies.

Dave, thats a very good reason for the vents to be removed, but im wondering that after they didnt find any alarm siren, why they didnt steal anything.

Linda...without naming the storage site you use, would it be the one where the owner has a large red brick house?

Adrian - the storage compound I use does not have a red brick house so it must be a different one to yours.
