I was in my local caravan dealer yesterday and i was very surprised to see how busy it was considering the current financial climate we are in. The carpark was busy and as i walked around a number of caravans were either sold or reserved and it was not the cheaper end of the market it's expensive ones which are selling. It looks like more people are looking to stay in the uk for there holidays

Your right more people are staying in the U.K for there holidays which is great people spending our money in our country BUT the only thing is that there will be no pitches left for our holidays we will have to stat planning a year in advance just like i do when going abroad.

This is only going to work if the summer is good. Another rainy one and people will wonder if they actually saved anything by staying here. I am all for supporting the UK but when the costs at our main holiday destinations rival the most expensive Riviera hotspots, and the service is bad, and the parking costs atrocious, then why bother.

Think back as to why people left in droves for the Costa's in the first place. It was for the sun, and the cheap booze was a second advantage. The cheap booze is still there, but not so cheap, but the sun sure is. If you ask kids whether they want 2 weeks of sun, sand and beach, or walking around a wet garden centre stuffing their faces, then possibly some will choose the garden centre. But they are the couch potatoes anyway.

Sorry, if the choice is a wet week in York, or a sunny week in Mallorca, then I am 'off to sunny Spain viva Espana' etc etc. Plus by the time I pay fuel costs to York and back, I have paid the charter air tickets.

Yes, there is a huge shortage of caravan pitches here in Cornwall, according to our local paper, this week, the county needs a further 40,000 pitches, so it's urging farmers to seek permission to use some of their land for tourism - leaving it a bit late though. So, make sure you book up early, and let's hope that the weather is kind, we're due a decent summer for a change.

Andrew, we were looking at getting a new 'van in November, and were also amazed at the busyness of the dealers, and the lack of discounts being offered, though that may have changed in the last few months with the recession biting harder.

Yes I agree with Scotch Lad there all want to go caravaning but if we have a year like last mud up to your arm pits rain day in day out there all give up and go back to package holidays.

Its Ok selling more caravans and the clubs accepting thousands of new members but as mentioned before, the number of site pitches is not increasing proportionately and I agree you now need to book months in advance, even for weekends - the Caravan Club site at Braithewaite Fold in Windermere is a classic example - its already booked up for most of the year - bank holiday pitches especially are in short supply all the time

A good summer will help, Iwas away in late August and e had two great sunny weeks,I also reckon more pitches need to be provided. More sites are needed to help the industry, as buyers will feel mift at investing in a holiday that is restrictive to when they use it. So lets see more sites-and sooner rather than later to!

Last week I heard that a British car maker is likely to go under taking 100000 jobs, today I saw the same figures on a UK news web site.

Also see from Europe that GM our trying to off load Vauxhall and also it look like they are ditching SAAB and the Swedes government is refusing to bail them out. I wouldn't get to excited about any sales.

Sorry I wouldn't get very excited about caravan sales, it proabably means more houses have been repo'd. The UK is going to get in a far worse state I fear.

The general consensus is that for GM to sell off Opel/Vauxhall/Saab is about the best thing that could happen to these 3 makes. Through no fault of their own they are being dragged down by GM's financial turmoil so the sooner a buyer is found the better. Opel/Vauxhall is actually not in bad shape although not the same can be said for Saab.

I've just been listening to You and Yours on Radio 4 - and they were at the NEC talking to the MD of Swift. He said that sales in the first three days of the show this year equalled sales in the whole show last year, and they expect today, tomorrow and Sunday to be their busiest days!

This was actually quite a balanced article about caravanning, mentioning the apparent down-turn in the industry, with redundancies etc., contrasted with apparently increasing sales of both new and second-hand vans, and increasing bookings for pitches as well as mobile home holidays. For once they didn't get caravanning confused with holidaying in a static, as these programmes often do.

Excellent news for all the suppliers of caravan equipment. Aquarolls owners F L Hitchman must be coining it in. Let's hope this creates jobs for those who lost theirs.

Cheers

being cynical but are we sure all these vans were sold to real cusomters.?

Could the dealers be selecting some vans as 'sold' thus making potential customers more keen to buy if they think they may loose out on that special van?

I think there is merit in your perception. Could be worse than the proverbial double glazing salesman! Buy this minute or lose the special 25% one off discount!

Cheers
