I am hoping that all you experienced caravanners can help me, and put an end to all the conflicting reports I have heard with regards to securing our caravan.

We pick up our brand new Sprite Major 6 at the end of February and are so looking forward to our new venture.

However, we would like to know what you would recommend we use in the way of security. I have read and heard so many names, saracen, bull dog, milenco. Which makes etc would you recommend

to secure it. I know at the end of the day, if the thieves want to steal it then they will, but want to make sure that they will have trouble doing so.

I would appreciate any help on this, as it is starting to stress me ...........aaaaargh!!

Thank you

Hi Sam

Find out what conditions if any are contained in your caravan insurance policy with regard to caravan security and start from there. Does a wheelclamp and hitchlock have to be fitted at all times when the caravan is left unattended?

This may have a bearing on the weight of the security equipment that you use.

I use fairly lightweight wheelclamps on my t/a caravan when I'm away touring but more substantial heavier ones when the caravan is in storage.

If you have the AL-KO secure receiver fitted then get either the AL-KO or Bulldog Max clamp to fit it. If you do, then theres very little chance of it getting robbed. Also a AL-KO hitch lock, these can be used hitched or unhitched so great for when you stop at the services. Just as important is choose a decent insurer, Bakers or the Caravan club are very good.

Hi Paul

Thank you for your reply.

The AL-Ko receiver was our first choice. Unfortunately, our caravan is unable to accept one of these. Which is a real pain.

I am at a loss as to what to get. Towsure have recommended Milenco Wheel Clamps and the caravan dealers that we have bought the van from are recommending the Bulldog.

Look for security intems that have the Sold Secure gold standard.

As a matter of personal preference I'd go for a Nemesis Full Stop wheel clamp which exceeds the Sold Secure Gold standard (the sold secure logo woll be displayed on the packaging of security items)

This forum page doesn't properly support links ( well I can't get them to work anyway) but copy / paste this into your web browser.

The sale price is genuine because they are advertised elsewhere as being more expensive. An Al Ko hitchlock willl satisfy your insurers.

One word of caution, if you pull up for a break at, say, a motorway services try not to leave your caravan completely unattended because caravans fitted with appropriate security devices have been stolen during stopovers and toilet breaks despite locks, clamps etc.

Enjoy your new caravan and if we can answer any queries at all then ask away!

We are going to insure our caravan throught the Caravan Club.

Having looked at the full stop products online, I think we will go for the Nemesis wheel clamp and the Saracen hitch lock.

I was thinking of buying 2 clamps for when the van is in storage, or do you think I am being too cautious!!!!!

Hello Sam,

The essence of security is to make your property less appealing or more difficult to steal. If by having two wheel clamps the low life feels it presents too much work or a greater chance of detection they hopefully may look elsewhere.

It is rotten that we have to be cautious, but only you can decide if the deminshed risk of theft is worth the extra cost of additional devices. Talk to your insures, they may offer a reduced premium because of the extra measures your take

In answer to your question in the comments Sam

A lot depends on the level of security at your caravan storage.

By insuring your caravan through one of the two major clubs you will ensure that your caravan is covered by a reputable insurer.

When you arrange your insurance cover ask the CC representative what security precautions you need to take to maintain your cover.

They will be happy to offer advice and information as to what measures to take.

It's common for the fitting of one wheelclamp on a single axle and two for a twin axle plus a hitchlock and alarm etc

Be honest with the insurers about where your caravan is stored and the security levels and then if the absolute worst happened you will have full cover provided you have complied with the T&Cs contained in your policy.

And if you have a motor mover, or intend to get one, make sure your eventual choice of wheel clamp will fit between the tyre and mover roller.

To be honest, in storage someone is likely to have the time to get the two off. What i mean is, if they know how to/manage to get one of, then 2 won't cause too much of a problem{pipe delimiter} Just a thought/

Hi Sam, We had this dilema a few months back. You don't mention whether you have an Alko stabiliser, or maybe you did but i didnt read properly.

We bought a Saracen hitchlock for ALKO stabiliser. It can be fitted Hitched or Unhitched and takes only about 5 mins max.

It is insurance approved and you can get it from tesco direct at the moment for about
