Caravan thefts on sites

There have been several posts on about caravan thefts from homes etc., which is deplorable and sickening, but what percentage of caravans are stolen from sites? We usually stay on cc sites which tend to be a bit safer with having the barrier system, but in general, are many caravans stolen off sites? There is always someone eager to steal various accessories belonging to fellow caravanners from inside awnings or underneath the caravan, which have been worked hard for, but I just wonder if many vans go too!

John,

Sorry to hear about your Truma covers being stolen.

Were they stolen from Caravan Club sites or commercial sites? If Caravan Club sites could you please say from which sites?

Hi Hamer

no thefts at either club sites, all three went at seperate large commercial sites, Two in brean sands somerset (different sites) and the last one in the peak district two weeks ago.

Getting to the point I will now automatically take it off and store in the van whilst away.

Cheers

John

Re caravans being stolen from sites I think I can only recall two incidents. One a good number of years ago from, I think but not 100% sure, Sandy Balls on the South Coast. Another more recently was a Caravan Club warden at a site in Birmingham, might have been a temporary site set up for a caravan show.

On the subject of accessories and equipment being stolen from vans on site it seems more and more incidents of this are being reported. The site at Clumber Park has had a lot of bad press about bicycle theft. It's bad enough people coming onto sites to steal things but it's even worse to think that it might be fellow caravanners who are the culprits.

Some time ago I purchased a security device from Towsure - basically a lenght of heavy duty wire which you feed through items of value and secure to caravan frame. A small battery sends current through the wire so that if wire is cut an alarm sounds. I have never used it but seriously thinking about looking it out to use on aquaroll and wastemaster.

Sad times

Hello Chrissie,

Caravans are stolen from sites but it's not often it makes the headlines. Heres one posted recently.

You can get an idea from existing lists of how many are stolen from sites, storage or driveways but most will not be reported anyway.

From my experience of travelling all round Europe firstly with a

tent and lately with a caravan I have never encountered any theft. So would I be right in saying this problem is far more prevalant to our home shores.

Heres another one stolen from a secure storage site.

It looks like he had plenty of security fitted, but hadn't sorted out any insurance, as he didn't have the log book.

Since reading about thefts from caravans I have now identified all my equipment by painting small but clear marks on my gear that can be clearly seen just by walking past.

It won't stop it but I can now identify it as mine.... paranoid or what??

Noticeable how few non U.K.'vans are hitch locked or wheel clamped while on sites abroad. On a similar theme, fifteen/twenty years ago on the then quieter Greek islands, I saw firstly security mirrors then

C.C.Tv. being installed even in small shops as the resorts became popular with British tourists. And the warning notices were mostly in english.

About three years ago, I sold some caravan related things on ebay and the same person bought all of them.

When he called to collect the items, he told me that he had had his van stolen from a campsite (commercial). It had a wheel lock on it, the awning was erected. He and his wife had gone out for the day and when they got back the van and all its contents including the awning had been stolen from the campsite.

He wasn't insured.
