Caravaning in the Isle of Man

My wife and I are relatively new to caravanning having purchased our beloved Sprite Alpine in October 2009. We have already had a number of wonderful holidays, but with my wife being from the Isle of Man we would like to visit relatives and take our caravan to the IOM.

However it is our understanding that to do so we must submit a written request to the Secretary of the Planning Committee of the Department of Local Government and the Environment. This request must give details of the proposed dates of arrival and departure, purpose of the visit, the reason why the caravan is being “imported” and where it will be sited.

This seems like a long protracted process and we wondered if any members have made such an application and if it was successful or otherwise.

If you go into UK campsite reviews and search 'Isle of man Sites' then Laxey and Quarry Road Campsite, there is some useful information about obtaining permission for taking a caravan over, including costs. I have always been under the impression that this was actually forbidden, but apparently this is not the case and permission is rarely refused provided certain criteria are satisfied.
Are you absolutely sure that you will be comfortable towing on the island's narrow, twisting roads? (I suppose the distances involved will be quite small.)
Good luck if you go for it - it's a lovely place.
