Sorry I haven't but would love to hear as well, since reading 'Narrow dog to Carcassonne', we have fancied going there.

The nearest site to Carcassonne is Camping Campeole de la Cite, which is just outside the walls of the old city. There are other sites in and around the area - we stayed at Camping Le Martinet Rouge at Brousses le Villaret, 15 km north of Carcassonne - which we thought was lovely. Others have recommended Domaine d'Arnauteille which is about the same distance to the south.
Our friend has a house nearby, and last year we passed Camping Val d'Aleth, alongside the little river, smaller and in a typical southern village.
Then there's the municipal sites, plenty of them all around and generally cheaper. The municipal site at Capestang, for instance *(smallish site, in a village alongside the Canal du Midi - where Terry Darlington sailed through). It doesn't have it's own website - but is VERY cheap - I think around 6 euros per night, from memory, when we had a look last year. You may find more information about campsites in the area, on the Office du Tourisme website for that area. By the way, although the website showing the locations of municipal campsites has two symbols - tents and tents/caravans we've certainly seen caravans on some of the sites showing a tent only symbol.
In my opinion, whilst Carcassonne is lovely, and worth a visit, there are many other fantastic places in the area and you may actually be better a bit away from 'the madding crowds' in Carcassonne itself - just have a day and evening visit to the old Cite itself. Needless to say, it's an area we love, and keep going back to!

We also wanted to visit Carcassonne this year for a few days. We contacted Camping de la Cite and they will only accept a min of 7 nights stay in high season. We have theerfore elected to stay in Narbonne so from there we can visit Carcassonne and also the med.

We have stayed in the area a couple of times, although not in Carcassonne itself. We go for simple, often Municipal, sites. Have a look in the CC Europe 1 directory under Carcassonne. We have stayed at Lezignan Corbieres and a small family site near Belflou (can't remember the name). This coming summer we are going to Trebes. As we are walking the canal du midi, we are slowly working our way East towards the sea. Lezignan Corbieres was our first visit to the area and was some years ago in early summer, but it's a pleasant site (at least in the older part, which is true of many) and within walking distance of the small town. Trebes is also within walking distance of the town, a couple of supermarkets and the canal, with its lock.

In our experience, Carcassonne gets very crowded - especially the cite and you may prefer to stay a little way out and visit for day or two. The local tourist office (look on line) will also have information about camping in the area.

We stayed in Camping de La Cite a couple of years ago in June and found it to be very good. It is a pleasant 15 minute walk along the river towpath to get to the old city so providing you go early or late you can avoid the crowds. When we went during our usual dog walk time around 9 to 10am it was very quiet and similarly after 5pm. At least staying close by enables you to see the place unhindered, but other posters are right in that it gets a bit manic when the coaches arrive.
The only niggle about the site was that there were not enough toilet blocks open, many women were using the men's block to avoid queues in the morning.

We stayed at Camping Lestap nr Mazamet which is a lovely site and about an hour from Carcassone and Val de Mer/Beziers. The area around Camping Estap is beutiful wooded and hilly and being higher than the coastal plain tends not to be so hot during high summer. Estap has a website which responds to Google! Agree with other Carcassone is well worth the visit but it and the area does get crowded.

An hour from Carcassonne opens up many sites on the Med, near Narbonne for example. We've stopped at Camping la Nautique, which is located on a large Etang within a few km of Narbonne and right off the Med autoroute too. Nice site, individual washrooms per pitch as well which I haven't seen too often. Not a bad place to spend a week on the Med and within an hour of Carcassonne - you pays your money etc..

We have stayed twice at a campsite attached to Chateau de Pennautier just outside Carcassonne but the last time we tried they were only accepting longer stays. Worth a go, though - it was great and there was an excellent restaurant next door at the chateau's vineyard. Easy to get to the aire off the motorway to watch the fireworks on Bastille Day.
