Carrying bikes in Spain and France

I have heard that it is illegal to carry bikes on the back of a car in Spain. I will shortly be taking my caravan to Spain and France and intend to tow with bikes on the back of the car.

Can anyone give me advice on this matter.

That is new to me! We have towed for several years with bikes on a Witter towbar carrier all over Europe including France and Spain and not experienced any problems. Will be interested to see what replies you get.

It is not illegal to carry bikes on the back of a car in Spain. However, overhanging loads must have a 50 by 50cm aluminium warning board with reflective diagonal red and white stripes. Presumably it only needs to be present when the caravan is not hitched up.

Italy has a similar requirement although their warning board has a slightly different design and the two countries do not have reciprocal agreement to accept each other's plate.

I think you're getting confused with traffic law in Portugal. It is forbidden to carry bikes on vehicles where they extend beyond the width of the vehicle - so cars carrying bikes on the back are illegal but not motorvans. In practice, there will be no objection to bikes on the rear of cars when the caravan is attached.

As far as Spain goes, I've carried bikes on a rear carrier attached to the towball of my car for many years.
