I have the caravelle 4 with the remote dial and ignition, the heater ignites and stays lit but it will only run flat out even if I turn the dial down. Does anyone have any ideas as to what it could be?

The Caravelle 4 only has two burner settings On or Off it does not modulate the flame in between those settings. The wall control contains temperature sensing components and will turn the heater off or on as necessary according to the position of the rotary temperature dial.
When it's working properly it should take at least a couple of minuets or more between switching off and on again.
Carver stopped production of the Caravelle 4 in the early 1990's so your heater will be between 30 and 40 years old.
One possible reason for it malfunction, The Caravelle 4 needs a smoothed 12V supply so its essential that you have a 12V battery fitted to the caravan to smooth the chargers output. Without a smoothed supply the circuit might see the rectified output from the caravan 12V charger as a series of switch on spikes causing it appear to be on all the time.
