Hello Fatboy,
The fire fronts were precoated steel, and must be specified for high temperaturse both conducted and radient of in excess of 200 degrees C
If you use a paint that is rated less than 200C, at best the paint will discolour, and worst it may crack and even set fire.

Best option is take it to a local polyester powder coating firm, loads of colours and they bake it at 200C+ so not problems with fire or discolouring.
I chose white, mainly because changing colour for a 'one off' coating is expensive and white was the colour they were using at the time, it did though stay perfectly white for years and it looked suprisingly very smart I might add!

If you look on ebay for heat resistant paint you'll find several colours in aerosols for painting engines and brake calipers. Those paints withstand very high temperatures - probably higher than your fire cover will ever get.
