CC Rally Centres

As some of you know we have been very opposed to rallies which in general we have considered to be a waste of time as we did not fancy being pitched on some farmer's muddy field full of sheep whatevers and no EHU.

However due to the economic downturn and sites being priced out of our reach at present, we were considering doing rallies with the CC and perhaps other organisations to save some money.

I have just looked at the CC Gloucestershire Rally website and to my amazement they have 11 committee members. Isn't this a bit of an overkill? Why do they need so many members on the committee. Is it to police you according to their regualtions etc. Are all CC centres like this?

I think that is enough to put us off rallying with the CC as I guess it applies to all CC rallies as every one wants to be a little Hitler. Please tell us that we are wrong.

I can't speak for the CC because I'm not a member Ian.

We are members of the C&CC and in order to maximise our use of the caravan we started to go on local district association rallies last year. (The CC operates a similar local rally setup)

There are quite a few committee members within our organisation as well but I can honestly say that they don't impinge on our enjoyment of the rallies in any way.

We arrived at our first one last year full of misgivings and trepidation expecting a 'Rally Feurher' to march round barking orders about where to pitch but we couldn't have been more wrong.

We stopped outside the stewards caravan, the husband and wife were friendly and welcoming and directed us in the general direction of the other caravans with a casual wave of the hand.

They asked if we had children with us, we hadn't so they suggested the part of the field where more adults were rallying and that was it.

We met two lady committee members on the Sunday who were selling raffle tickets but that's the only committee involvement as far as we were concerned.

We were at another rally which was a seventies weekend with a huge marquee and live entertainment, the committee must have worked hard to put that on and it must have been a committee member who sold us the tickets I suppose.

At the seventies weekend there was a lot of things for youngsters to do, water slides, running, mini football and rounders all well away from the caravans of course but the only 'regulation' as far as we are concerned is to pitch the appropriate distance from the next caravan.

Club members take it in turns to steward meetings if they want to, anybody is allowed to have a go and it's a good way of getting to know fellow ralliers.

The 'committee' that at first sight seems so intimidating are normal caravanners like everybody else, they want to enjoy a nice inexpensive weekend rally in a nice location just like everybody else and I would strongly urge anyone with doubts like we had to go for it.

I can't speak for rally organisers as I don't do rallies - but any organisation that relies totally on volunteer effort to both organise and run events often needs 4x the number theoretically needed because of non-availability, eg work, family, holiday, other leisure activities.

Very often ANYONE prepared to do some work, however little, is invited to join the committee.

Ian, Rallying is not the only alternative to to expensive club and commercial sites.

We have never been keen on rallying so we have always used CL's. Yes sometimes a farmers muddy field without EHU. Other times it could be a garden site, with perfect lawn or hardstanding and equipped with EHU.

If you can manage without lecky you can save a of money on site fees.

Ian - yes you are wrong

I am not on our committee but know that every member works very hard for little reward except knowing that people are having a good time - and that is what they are doing it for.

The only way to find out if rallies are for you is to book on one and find out.

I never thought it would be for us until we tried one - now we are 5 years on with a hundred rallies under our belt.

Around one half of our rallies are at commercial sites anyway at substantially less than what every one else is paying.

Give it a go - recommended.

As we are Avon CC members I would guess that we use a lot of the same sites so I would be happy to let you know what any particular site we have visited is like - alternatively ring up the rally officer.

Thanks for some informative answers. Going on some of the answers, I had a another look at their rally calendars and it seems the majority of the rallies are without EHu. Unfortunately we need EHU.

Very good!

We resisted the temptation to take part in the 'fancy dress' because it was normal everyday wear for us back in the day lol.

The reason they may have 11 committee memeber is because the have a large membership, what tends to happen when your centre is spread over a large area 2 rallies may be run at the weekend so people from one end of the area dont have to travel long distances.

A lot of rallies during the winter tend to have hook up as they take advantage of the slack times at some sites but in the summer mainly a field.

Give it a go sometimes you have to take the rough with the smooth but overall you go to some lovely places,Beaulieu grounds for one.
